While I had decided to go with a 1080p plasma, I just had the opportunity to purchased a new in box Pioneer pdp-5070hd with a 3 year warranty for almost $700 less than the 1080p sets. The guy I bought it from was laid off and was really hurting for cash. Has anyone had any experience with this model?

I was on the fence regarding 720p and 1080p, but since I have blu-ray I decided to go 1080p. Then this opportunity came along. My sofa is 12' away from the TV so hopefully it will not make a big difference.

Any recommendations for stands would also be appreciated. Also, I am debating if I should bring someone in to calibrate this set.

Thanks

Don't calibrate! A waste of money. You are getting a 2 generation old set. It never had a 3 year warranty from Pioneer. One year, yes. The story sounds fishy. PM me and I can get you into the service mode to read the internal clock timer.

.....NakDoc, considering Pioneer stands on a 9-generation plasma mountain, shouldn't NYinDallas be thrilled to get this new-in-box Pioneer plasma for $700 less than other 1080p brands?....Congratulations, NYinDallas, enjoy....please post comments after you get it going .....

Hello,

Will not know for sure if this will happen until tomorrow. Extra 2 years on warranty is from Best Buy where it was purchased 6-8 weeks ago. For 1100 it was hard to not try to make this happen.

I just picked up a Pioneer PDP-5020FD from Best Buy Tuesday and absolutely love it. I've been researching plasmas for about a year now and everything I have read or heard says Pioneer is the absolute best.

If you're talking about a professional ISF calibration, then yes, you may want to.
Everybody I know from other forums that's had it done, said it was worth every penny. Just put the break in time on it first..........
Good luck with it.

Well, the guy never showed up with the set. I would have been happy to take it for 1100. Looks like he backed out. So for now I am still quite happy with my favorite picture of all time on my Sony kd-34xbr970. That set will stay in the family room for now and I will wait patiently for a Plasma deal to good to pass up. This has been educational and I will now keep my eyes open for 50" Plasma Sets at 1080P at the right price. It would have been nice to own a Pioneer and maybe one day I will. Thanks for the feedback
