People in the movies have awesome alarm clocks

Ever notice in some movies, particularly ones that don't do well, have alarm clocks and portable radios that have such amazing sound coming out of their small three inch full range driver? It's like GE custom made a kick ass hi-fi alarm clock specifically for that movie.

Similar to mine, except it's an actual small stereo system, switched on by a timer clock. Night stand lamp comes on too.

I want an alarm clock that has Cameron Diaz's voice softly-knudging me awake in the morning, just like the one Tom Cruise had in "Vanilla Sky".

I used to have the best vintage alarm clock. It was a Sears/Tradition brand with analog-driven big 'LED'(actually incandescent) numbers...looked digital but it was motor driven....the seconds indicator was a large orange 'Sun' that kept blooming and shrinking...had a REAL buzzer that could wake up a hibernating bear.

Use a Marantz (or other brand) audio timer, hooked to your main stereo. Depending upon what recording you set to have it play, you can awaken to the gentle sounds of birds and the breeze, or a tape of Cameron Diaz, or --for the heavy sleeper who needs an extra-strong "nudge"-- the violent crashing of cymbals and blaring of trumpets... Should an even stronger wake-up call be needed, hook up a 24-volt system to the audio timer (using a relay), and connect a big semi truck horn, placed next to the bed and aimed at you... if it doesn't wake you, you're already dead. :scratch2:... If it wakes you, you might be dead, too --from a heart attack! :D

I have a small Japanese alarm clock that looks like some kind of bizarre cartoon weapon system. I don't really need an alarm clock, but use it sometimes, anyway. It's fun! When it goes off, it sounds like a machine gun firing. Then when you hit the "off" button to stop it, it makes the high-pitched, descending sound of a missile/bomb falling from the sky, followed by a (somewhat distorted) explosion. Although only powered by three AA batteries, it is LOUD --so loud that I put it in another room, not the one I'm sleeping in. Otherwise I'll probably have that heart attack when it goes off. I think the neighbors can probably hear it when it goes off. Not sure how they make it so loud; it must have a very efficient speaker (piezo, maybe?). Not much bass quality, but ear-piercingly loud highs, easily equal to a commercial fire alarm.

I think a lot of people would be surprised at how little of the sound that's in a movie, is actually from location.

I'm surprised when I hear an alarm clock in a movie with big, stereo sound. Most sound guys I've worked with are better than that....yet it happens all the time.

Movies have the best audio/visual enhancement techs when it comes to affects. They can take a "pin drop" and make it sound like a thunder storm, and do it to where you believe it is true.

Speaking of killer alarm clocks....I just bought a Tangent Duo clock-radio that is a serious little piece of work. Does anyone else out there know about these beauties? Excellent Danish design and build. I love it.

People in old movies (and movies about pre-solid state days) also have incredible tube radios that come on instantly.

I remember those. The 'film strip' that made the numbers always kept breaking.

Anyhoo... in the spirit of Mad Men...

One day-- in the 21st century-- I predict they'll have telephones that can be alarm clocks and even tell you the day of the week!

Maybe they could even have a scratch paper or index card feature.

Just need a catchy marketing phrase... lessee... Smart... Phone?

Nah! Never happen. :D
