Period Snapshot Films

I love 'em, especially if they nail everything (good & bad) about an era. I'll start, with this one, Ruthless People. Distribution by Disney if you can believe it. For me it summed up the 80s even though they hadn't ended yet. Great acting, horrifying and cringeworthy yet delightful lines, one of the best (for me) "Crockett & Tubbs, they're floating!". What are some of your favorite period snapshot films?

For me, the `60s were defined by films like "Ocean`s 11" (the original, when Rat Pack Vegas was in it`s prime), "American Graffiti" , and "Easy Rider" (it`s violent finale paralleled a turbulent decade crashing to an end).

The `70s were well-represented by the likes of "Dirty Harry", "Star Wars", and "Deep Throat" (the Sexual Revolution was in full swing during the `70s). NYC`s Times Square was probably at it`s most depraved point in "Taxi Driver" (although I DO sometimes miss the dirty old Deuce (42nd St.) from that time period)

The `80s took a turn toward big-budget action films like "Raiders Of The Lost Ark", "The Terminator", "Top Gun".
The `80s were probably the last of the "old-school" film making, before the heavy proliferation of CGI took all the reality out of the business. (Just my opinion, of course)

I have a soft spot for 80s genre film and both Top Gun & Terminator are good snaps of the pop culture.

I'd add The Sure Thing and Real Genius too.

The dance club in Terminator just screams 1980s. It always gets me nostalgic until the shooting starts.

Over The Edge (1979) always takes me right back to my misspent youth.

Bit later that would've been Rivers Edge (1986),,,check is in the mail,,,LOL...

Also on the lighter side of this Dazed and Confused (1993) does so as well.

Moved from SE. Wisc. to ATX my senior year of HS,so that last one is particularly relevant.

Even have a friend who's car is in D&C,and a couple of other friends that were extras in it.

Ahhh the memories.

Rewatched Office Space a few weeks back. One audio company I worked at in the late 90s truly resembled Initech complete with the cubicle farm, efficiency experts, clueless and too many middle managers, motivational posters, and Tchotchkes (Friday's) for lunch. If a future sociologist ever wants to review the pre-9/11 corporate culture, Office Space would be a great source.
