Phase Linear and AudioSource...Score?

Steelman

Super Member
A buddy gave a customer of his my phone number. Turns out this guy has the following for sale:

Phase Linear Model 400 Series Two Amplifier
Phase Linear Model 500 Series Two Tuner (has to find it)
AudioSource Model Pre One preamp
Bose 901 Series VI with EQ and Tulip Stands

We got to BS'ing...

He sold me the 400 series two and the audiosource for $50.00 each...Don't know if this qualifies as a score...

Pre working as designed...
scratchy pots and the like.

Amp not sure yet...meter on the right works with the pre...
when I connect a CDP directly to the amp, no meter movement???
scratchy pots as well. Gonna give the amp a quick look see...

I would say "score" even if they didn't work. The 400 isn't that difficult to repair, and they sometimes sell for decent dollars on CL or eBay.

(Plus, its fun to own.) :thmbsp:

Seems real simple on the inside...
gonna give it a quick deoxit bath and see what happens. :scratch2:
Unit is very dusty and has been sleepin' for a bit.

Yeah, but maybe, one day, JUST MAYBE, that line MIGHT work...Hope springs eternal 'n' all, y'know...(grin)

BE CAREFUL with that Linear... be sure to use speakers you don't care about until you've driven it around the block a few times..

could the speakers I am using be bad? thus the reason the led's on one channel are not showing any output?

The issue with the Linears is when they go bad, they tend to like to flame the speakers, hence the nickname Flame Linear through the years... Just be sure yours is OK before hooking speakers you care about to it..

Can you guide me through a few checks that I can do with my DMM?

Here are some nudies...

Virtual troubleshooting time! Step right up!

Service manual @ HifiEngine (not the later model but hopefully close aside from the meters)

You mentioned scratchy pots on the preamp so the power amp controls will need some deoxit as well. If the LEDs aren't dancing when you adjust the input level controls, then you probably won't hear anything out of the amp if you hooked up speakers to that channel. You wouldn't want to do that until you do the next step.

First, measure DC voltage on the speaker outputs on both channels (from red to black, right channel then left). The voltage should be under 50mv but could be close to 100v if something is hosed.

Do the LEDs flicker when the unit is turned on? Are there any burnt components hiding on the circuit board? If not, this may be something simple. Big amps often fail with smoke and flames. Do the heatsinks get warm? Are all the fuses OK?

Lots of easy things to check but lets get these out of the way.
