Phase Linear (Andromeda) Phase III speakers -familiar with these?

Hello
New to the site and love it, lots of helpful info and very nice people.
I just picked up my first pair of phase linear andromeda lll panels for a hundred bucks in Tucson Arizona last week, they need a little work and I didn't get the subs or equalizer but I will keep my eyes open. Somewhere in one of these threads I saw a link to the brochure but can't find it again.
Anyway glad to be part of the forum.

Nice, hope you luck with them. That eq and subs may well be nearly impossible to find but you are in the right place to find them if they are out there ! Come on guys, jump in here !

I had a contact at one time but have since lost it. I have 2 subwoofer modules that need both drivers re-conned and some of my components on the panels could use some work as well.

I wish I had an answer for but I don't. Thought I would bump the thread and hope it gets some attention. Perhaps post over at classic speaker ?

I took mine to Dixie Speaker Repair in Trussville Alabama. They did a great job with mine!

Heard! Are you a part of Aging Alabamian Audiophiles? It's a really nice, laid back facebook group. Please join if you haven't already.
I would but I do not care for social media and do not have a FB account. May be a way around it though, use someone else's account ? Establish a fake one ?? Thanks for letting me know about it. Oh, and I am no audiophile, I like all the gear, even the really cheap stuff..lol

Hello everyone, I just picked up a set with everything included.
My question is, looking at the speaker setup in the manual, is it telling me that the speaker wires from the bass module to the amp, both left +/- go to the left speaker channel connection on the amp and both +/- go to the right channel connection on the amp?
Doesn't make sense but thats what the diagram on the manual looks like it's depicting.

You will use the positive and negative for each channel of your amplifier to the bass module. The drawing uses a single line from the amp then breaks it out to + -

once your amp is connected to the bass module you will use another pair of wires to go to the panels, make sure you have all + and - connections correct.

I've owned mine since new but have always lived in a small apartment or condo. Finally moving into a house with a large space and I want to get the most out of these wonderful antiques. I inspected the cones and all are intact. Manual is long gone. My question: Some folks here have noted that these speakers are power-hungry. I've been driving them with mid-range AV receivers with about 75WPC. I can step up now, but I don't want to destroy the speakers with an overpowered amp. I'd still like the convenience of a integrated unit (my Dynaco and Crown equipment is awaiting restoration as a retirement project). What is the ideal (and safe) max output I should be using to fill a 700 sq. ft. space? I'll appreciate any and all suggestions.

You cant harm speakers with too powerful of an amp... You CAN with an underpowered amp!! You are in control of the volume potentiometer....

For a 700 sq foot room you should be fine with 75-100wpc. If you are using the PL subwoofer that goes with the Andromedas 100-125 wpc should be fine.
Thanks. Yes, I am using the original subwoofer. There seem to be some good AV receiver choices from SONY, Onkyo and Denon in that power range and it will be good to be able to buy something off the shelf that will do the job. Appreciate the quick reply.

Ideally these speakers were sold along with PL 400 or 700. If recommend buying a dedicated power amp. If vintage amps are out of your price range some newer buget power can be had by emotiva, outlaw etc. HT receivers are fine for small 5.1 or 7.1 sub sat systems with powered subs. But these panel speakers loaded with drivers along with passive massive sub GREATLY benefit from lots of current....Also if on a budget look at some Pro audio amps...

Interesting. I have popped the 1 amp Buss fuses with a 70-watt AV receiver playing a rousing Mahler symphony, so when I hear "lots of current" I wonder if somehow I've been using the wrong fuse size all these years. Thanks for the info on components. I'll start studying. I opted for an integrated unit when HDMI became the norm because I wanted a single point of input/switching control, but I'm not afraid of adding quality components to power these speakers if I can integrate them intelligently. This will be my last (hopefully) system purchase (retirement) so I want to get it right the first time.

Please please hear this..... These were expensive speakers when new...use that AV receiver for something else.... You can find a used preamp for <125.00. Then buy a used pro audio amp from:

Crown
QSC
Yamaha
Altec Lansing
Ashly
Peavey

Should be able to pick up amp for <250.00 You will notice a big difference even at lower volume levels...

I am hearing you. No kidding. I used what was left of my flight pay when I got discharged to get the PL's, along with a Roberts 770 R2R deck and a Thorens TD125. I definitely want to protect them because they can't be replaced. I plan to refurb my Crown IC-150A and my Dynaco ST150's when I stop working. I'm just looking for something to tide me over until I have the time to do the refurbs and figure out how to manage digital inputs. Lots of catching up to do. Just downloaded the manual. 4 amp fuses in the sub and 2.5 amp in the panels. No wonder......

I am new to this group, so I hope I do this right. I have a Phase Linear Andromeda III Motion Control Unit. About 7 years ago in Seattle, I ran into a gentleman who worked at Phase Linear for 10 years, starting less than a year after Bob Carver started the Company. Turned out he had a storage unit, with the usual household items, and about 25 pieces of Phase Linear gear, mostly amps and preamps, one of their big cassette recorder and one set of the Andromeda speakers. (He said he got all the equipment in lieu of pay. Toward the end Mr. Carver - always a better engineer than businessman - had serious trouble making payroll. These pieces were his "final paycheck,") He had everything at his house for about a year, and then put it in a storage room, the first of three he used. He never did anything with any of the pieces. Just kept them in a storage room.

Unfortunately, he told me he had not been in the current storage unit for 15 years. It showed it. Some of the electronics had been covered, but not the Andromeda system. The wood on the panels was covered with mold, and badly pitted. About a two condition wise. None of the plastic pieces for the tweeters were there. The base unit - including the drivers - was also covered with mold and the metal frames of the speakers were badly rusted and pitted. The mid range speakers had also been attacked by the elements, and only two of them seemed salvageable for re-coning. He told me he needed to get everything out of the storage unit ASAP, so we agreed on a price, $1500 for everything, and I made two trips with my van and a trailer getting everything gone. I thought about what to do with the Andromeda system. Even realizing its scarcity, resurrecting them was going to be a long and daunting task, and I felt the time was better spent on the electronics. I have a friend who owned a one man stereo repair business for 40 years. I owed him a favor, so when he expressed interest in the Andromeda, I gave them to him with the caveat that if he ever got them working, I had to hear them. Unfortunately, he never did.

Now to the question. Turned out there were two of the Motion Control Modules. I have no use for it. It has been unused for more than 50 years, and may never actually have been used at all. This gentleman showed no interest in what he had or in stereo gear in any way. tested it about 5 years ago and it worked fine. It has been in a box ever since. I would say its condition is solid 8.5 - 9. None have ever been sold on either EBay or Audiogon, so I have no idea of its value. Seems like one of those items that has a very minute number of people who would value such a piece, but to the few who do, it must have some real interest. I would like to sell it. I am not looking to break the bank or hold out for some big price. I would rather see it go to someone who can really use it. If there are no members interested in it, can someone give me an idea of its value, and where you might go to sell it?
