Phase Technology PC 80 - Worth replacing woofers?

I have a chance to buy a pair of PT PC 80 speakers with stands for $30. Looks like the woofers need re-foaming or replacement. Phase Tech says that they do not recommend the after market re-foam kits, and that I can purchase them for $80 ea.. I can ship the speakers to them & they will install with no labor charge, or they can ship the woofers to me so I can install. If I do this, I'll have close to $200 invested in the speakers. Is it worth doing? I read very good things about these speakers.
How difficult is it to re-foam the woofer? Anyone have experience doing this?PC 80.JPG

I had those speakers from about 1996 to last year. I don't know about repairing the Woofer, but replacing the Woofer was easy (even for me, and I had never opened a speaker before...)

They sounded great for about 10 years. I wasn't paying close enough attention but the sound slipped quite a bit, and by 2015 they just didn't sound right. A new Woofer and new Tweeter (harder to install) along with new damping foam around the Tweeter didn't do the trick. I finally gave them to Goodwill.

They have a great cabinet and there are some real fans of the PC80 on these boards.

Those stands alone are worth $30, or maybe $100. Do the trade!

Still have my stands. They accommodate any number of high-end bookshelf speakers.

Found a good link on the AK site discussing the Phase Technology speakers & difficulties in refoaming the woofers.

Looks like I could re-foam them, but it is more difficult than the typical woofer.

BTW, Customer support was very prompt in responding to my inquiry yesterday. I did not expect such a speedy reply. Seems like Phase Tech has excellent customer service from what I am reading here on AK

But if it doesn't work, you've only mangled a woofer that you were going to toss anyway. And if it does you have a killer set of speakers (so I have heard, anyway) for almost nothing.
