PHILIPS 22 GA 437 TURNTABLE

I was trawling through eBay yesterday morning and noticed this.

A Philips 22 GA 437 turntable, for £99.50.

Now it was 48 years old, but even after I blew up the photos I could see it was immaculate.

I guess no one had bid on it as it had to be collected, the vendor wouldn't post it.

Now my Philips 308 I've had since 1972 has had a lot of use, I thought “what the hell.” So I bought it.

It was a 5 hour 120 mile round trip to the other side of Chesterfield yesterday afternoon, through the Peak District and “everyone was out in their cars, despite the price of petrol!” I saw a lot of sheep on the way.

It was a pain. But worth it. I don't think it had much use. The owner hadn't used it for years, it was in its cardboard box.

To connect anything in my wall unit it's a pain, as all the cables for it have to pass in and out of the wall unit's backboard to keep them out of sight. So a bit of garden wire had to be used to drag them through the two holes.

It's immaculate and in perfect working order, so I'm well pleased. It joins a lot of forty-plus year-old kit.

I just scored a GA308 for cheap.

It's the cutest little hifi turntable I've ever seen.

Snap!

I bought one of those in 1972, new from Comet in Stockport Cheshire, I think I paid around £30 for it. I bought the two Goodmans Havant speakers I still use at the same time, together with a Philips 790 tuner/amp which died about 20 years ago.

The turntable still works perfectly, but I changed the cartridge for a Shure M75 EJ.
I did buy it a new belt about 15 years ago.
The extraneous noises are from my little Lumix camera.
It's having a well deserved "rest" at the moment.

This it in action, less than a year ago.
