Philips N4504 hum

I recently bought a second hand Philips N4504 reel to reel tape deck. It sounds OK when I plug my headphones directly in to the tape deck, however there is a loud hum when listening through my amp with RCA cables connected. Any thoughts?

Sounds like a grounding problem on one of the cables or connectors on the RTR or on the amp input - Have you tried just plugging the left output in only and then the right - do they both hum or just one side ?

Not familiar with this machine but Phones amps are notorious for running off raw unregulated supplies. An Electrolytic replacement or two may be required.

Are you using a DIN-to-2xRCA cable?
You may have the wrong type of cable - the cable for recording is different from the cable for playback.
