Philips Speakers

More speakers...................
Today I brought home a pair of Philips FB695X speakers.
All the speakers work but the 4 woofers need to be refoamed.
Hope to pick up the surrounds this week to fix them.

Here is the back of the tweeter.
Also something I forgot to mention is that the wire connections on the woofers were all soldered while the connections on the tweeter are push on connectors.

Thanks JR, Too bad they are no longer available.
Both mine work though.
I did try the speakers for a brief minute before I took them apart and they did sound good, the bass was lacking a bit (of course with the condition the surrounds were in) I think they will sound pretty good when I get them done.
One thing I would like to do is install some rubber feet to get the bottom of the speakers off the floor.

All woofers are refoamed and installed back in the cabinets.
I really like the AA battery method of centering the voice coil, no more removing the dust cap for me :thmbsp:
So after I get everything all buttoned back up and the speakers hooked up I cannot for the life of me find the sweet spot, no matter what I did. I would keep hearing the left speaker just a very little bit louder than the right.
So I took the right speaker woofers out and I had the top one wired backwards.
Reversed the wires, put it all together, hooked it back up and there was the sweet spot back

Nice looking speakers! I bet you that Philips tweeter is nice in those. And BTW, what is the AA battery method you speak of? I'd like to hear more about that for re-foaming! I am assuming it has something to do with using woofer excursion to somehow center the voice coil or something? Cheers. :)

These certainly must qualify as some of the last "real" speakers Philips made. It's a shame they didn't survive ; there were so many manufacturers that used their drivers all through the 70's and early 80's. They were one of the few suppliers of raw drivers to the DIY market back then. Many speaker builders cut their teeth using Philips components and, by and large, it was all decent stuff.

Those are nice. My dad had a smaller version-single woofer. They sounded good. I foolishly tossed them because the foam disintegrated about 2 years ago.

The FB series were really nice. Would love to find a set of the 800 or 1000, but they are not too common.

Thanks for the replies.
When I refoamed these, I glued the surrounds to the cone first and let dry. The I put glue on the speaker frame and work the glue into the surround.
I hook the AA battery up to the speaker + to + - to -. this brings the cone out and center so I can work the surround to where it is supposed to be . I disconnect and reconnect the battery a few times pushing down on the cone to make sure it is not rubbing on the voice coil. I keep doing this until the glue is dry.
This is the first time I have tried this method and it worked very well on all 4 of these woofers.
These do sound pretty good now that I have all the woofers wired correctly!!

So now I have about $40 invested in these.

Yea, I was amazed at how well this method worked for me.
Like I said before, no more taking the dust caps off and shimming

Also these are the only speakers that I take the grills off to listen to....they are such a good looking speaker.
