Philly CL: Sansui 771 receiver, and speaker shootout
I sent an e-mail to the seller about the 771 - price kinda high I thought and said I'd negtiate in the $25-$50 range, $50 being a prestine unit. Ad says 8/10 cosmetically. So anyone have any thoughts on value including the non-working QS-100?? I need another Sansui for my ESS speakers that I've had since 1979 (refoamed).
I just did a shootout with the ESS speakers against a set of Infinity SM-255s and the ESS speakers are nice. Sound real sharp and crispy but lack the bass compared to the 15" woofers in the SM-255s, but turn the volume up and they sound mighty fine. ESS at 4 ohms SM-255s at 8 Ohms. I haven't set the amp to power them both at the same time, thinking I might be pushing my 999 a little too hard with the mis-matched Ohm rating. Am I correct on that? So at low volume the SM-255s are great but at higher volume the ESS speakers sing loud and very clear. Both sound very nice. I noticed that the SM series Infinities are not very well thought of but the 255s are the top of theSM line and sound very very good to me. I can listen to them for hours at a time (brewskie in hand) with no problem. Also it seams the more brewskies I have while listening the louder I turn it up. Beer must cause me to loose my hearing or something! BTW - I tested with CDs (caugh), and LPs. I'm still in the vinyl is better than digital boat. I have a VERY good CD player too, HHB 850 pro model and a OK turntable with a super cart (Ortophon M20E super). Now I've tested this with the SAME record and same CD both on the same song started at the same time switching between phono and AUX. My results tell me that vinyl beats the digital, but not all the time. I guess the record quality on vinyl is not as consistant as the digital media. But that might be due to the choice in records as I like some of the older 60's blues and zydeco which were not recorded/mastered in state of the art stuios back in the day. Also have noticed that SOME CDs are of lesser quality than the same vinyl record! The benefit of the CD is that there are more songs from out-takes durring the studio session that never made it to record but are now on the CD!! Some I've found to be better than the original LP choices, go figure that.
Anywho, give me your thoughts on value of the 771 and a non-working qs-100.
