Phono Noise Test on C2200

Can anyone tell me what one should expect and not expect with regards to phono noise from the C2200 preamp? In other words with the volume cranked up (35-45 on the preamp volume setting)with phono selected and turntable/arm/cartridge in circuit, I can hear definite hiss - substantially more than with the high level inputs. This would be expected - right? How much would be regarded as too much on the phono?
Is there a test I could do and I'm not sure if this would be harmful, but temporarily inserting shorting plugs to the phono input jacks and note the hiss/noise level?
I'm basically trying to determine whether I need to change the tubes in the phono section.

Thanks,

Mike P.

This is to be expected given the gain in a phono section. How much is too much really depends on you. I suppose you could take it into your dealer to see if it's still within specs, or you could do some hunting for quieter tubes if it's really bothersome.

There are a wide variety of tubes out there (seems to be getting wider every day) that would work in your phono section. Perhaps others can suggest ones that have worked well in this application.

My C220 is a bit noisy on all of the inputs (compared to the pre I had before it) but the sound is so good I really don't care. I may get quieter tubes one day, but for now it's the music that matters - not the hiss.

I had a pretty significant hiss on my C220 on the phono input, but it got a lot quieter when I swapped out the stock tubes. I've got a pair of Tung-Sol's in there now...
They are a very good tube at a reasonable price.

I'm a big fan of the Tung Sol reissues from New Sensor. They are big, musical and quiet. If you have to use a new production, these are the ones I prefer. I haven't tried the Mullard Reissues yet, but I think the Tung Sols are better than the Sovtek LPS, the EH and others.

FWIW, I hear some phono stage hiss at about 60 on my volume control with JBL Array speakers & at about 50 with my Cornwalls. If playing an LP at those levels, would quickly become hearing impaired - so its never bothered my. I'm using an MC275 with the C2200.
