Phono stage on a Marantz 2220B

Hi All-
Longtime listener, first time caller, and a little nervous. I run a ProJect Debut Carbon through a Marantz 2220B with Klipsch Synergy B3-bookshelf speakers. I've owned this set up for about 2 years. I just had the receiver professionally cleaned and recapped (got it used on eBay-no idea of history). Prior to the recap, I got major feedback on the speakers when listening to vinyl at higher volumes...pops and screeching, (Black Dog on Led Zeppelin IV). Lowering the bass fixed it, but the first POP always scared the crap out of me. It was always pretty good at low volumes, but I usually needed to increase treble. I was hoping the clean up would fix this problem, however it is still happening. The other inputs never have this problem, (Aux, tape, FM).

Now I'm wondering if it is the phono input??? Do you guys think running a preamp (affordable recommendations, please) would fix the problem? I would hate to pull it all apart again and bring it to the shop if a preamp would improve listening anyway over the internal phono stage...

Sorry to be long winded and a total noob. Thanks for your input and any recommendations on preamps that would fit well with my system.

My guess is that the phono stage of the 2220B is as good or better than most affordable new phono preamps.
Any chance you can try another turntable or cartridge ? maybe the source is the problem with the treble lacking ?

The 2220B phono board isn't as robust as the the 2230+ receivers and leaves a little to be desired. It also doesn't have the notorious failing 2sc458 but anything could be failing at its age.

At minimum I would recap it. Maybe 6 bucks in parts and 20 mins time.

For what it's worth, I bought a tube little bear phono pre for 130 and haven't looked back.

From your description, it sounds to me like you are getting feedback from the speakers through the turntable.
Have you tried isolating the turntable from the speakers? IE move the turntable as far away from the speakers as possible?
If that still doesn't help, try another table and / or cartridge combination as previously suggested.

Many months down the road, you are correct. I did add a ProJect Tube box with a rumble filter and that fixed the problem.
