Photo History Professors

When I was an undergrad at Arizona State and working on my BA degree back in the late '70's I had the fortunate opportunity to take several photo history classes from Bill Jay. I thoroughly enjoyed his classes and he was probably the best instructor I had period.

Bill Jay was/is passionate about photography and its history. His enthusiasm for the subject was clearly evident in his teaching. He has a very good sense of humor and his English accent made it better.

I also took one photo history class from well known Van Deren Coke (may he rest in peace). Very knowledgeable in his own right but compared to Bill Jay he was pretty dry and somewhat of an odd fellow IMO.

Then, many years ago, I went back to ASU to see and hear world renowned photo historian Beaumont Newhall talk about photography. Once there we were informed that he was not able to make the trip to ASU due to health reasons. He died not long after. I really wanted to meet, and hear him talk about photo.

Madonna Made Me Do It: How to appear profound when talking about your photographs

is one of the funniest things I've ever read -all the more so because it's true.

What an excellent link PV!!! I have thoroughly enjoyed reading through Bill Jay's site. You are very fortunate to have studied under him and I am envious. I love the history of photography. Thank you VERY much for sharing this. :thmbsp:

You are most welcome, sub. I still remember taking my first photo history class (Early 19th Century Photography) from him. Most of my art history professors up till that time were boring and it was very tough getting through a lectures class without nodding off a time or two. Not so with Bill Jay's class. I thoroughly enjoyed his photo history classes.

I'm glad you enjoyed the link to his website. He has quite the collection of photographs. Did you see his photograph of Ansel Adams?
