Picked up a 9090 DB

I was at the flea market and wandered over to my favorite vintage audio store/booth. There was a Sansui rack style system playing. It was black stackable with all components. A supposed 120 watt amp with 2 led diplays side by side and remote.

THe guy wanted 150 but I had no interest.

I look down on the floor and see this monster lying on its side. I lean over and see Sansui 9090DB. I almost fainted, how much?does it work? I think I was hyperventilating. I used to have some seriously huge Sansui stuff but I sold almost all of it last year.

Anyway, I ask the guy, Hong, how much. He rubs his chin and says 65 dollars.

I didn't want to seem to excited so I said yes and gave him the money. I carried this beast to my car and flew home in hyperdrive.

I unhooked the Marantz 2252b in my bedroom and hooked this sucker up to the the 250 watt Polk Audio Monitor 10's.

I started cranking and it bottomed them out at less than half volume. This son of a #@&*$ is incredible. I love it.

My G 7000 probably has a clearer sound but the power on this 9090 is really sick. It is up there with some of the 160 watt per channel stuff I have owned.

It is rated at 125 watts per channel. I have a lot of vintage audio gear and this blows most everything in its class away..

125 watts per channel is either lowballed or everyone else is high balling.

Can anyone tell me why this is so much more powerful than anything else I have rated at or near its class?

I should have wore a ski mask when I made this purchase for 65 bucks.

Nice find at a nice price. I had a 9090DB for quite awhile but sold it to make room for and even bigger Pioneer SX-1980

As far as power output Vs ratings I can only caution you that relating power output by volume control postion is not even close to a real indication of it's power output. The audio taper used in volume controls is not very precise and varies a lot between brands of pots. Only real useful test of power output is with proper test equipment and resistor loads and then measure the power output Vs onset of clipping. Many manufactures were conservative in their ratings and others might have been somewhat loose. FTA advertizing rules at the time were suppose to level the playing field somewhat.

Also you have to admit that for as large as the 9090DB is they sure stuck an awful small volume knob on it :D \

But then again I was always a 'big knobs' kind of guy

Full-tilt boogie mode....just shy of clipping.

(Generally about 0.5% THD+N, for the spec addicts):D
