Picked up a mint McIntosh 4200 in the original box!

This is my first McIntosh. I know it's not a McIntosh 275 or anything, but what are your thoughts on this receiver? These were made between 1985-1987 and retailed for almost 3k. I was in the market for a 4100 when I saw this so I jumped all over it. I'm coming from 1970's era Pioneers and Marantz so I'm not sure what to expect. Are the older, lower wattage McIntosh amps that much better sound wise? How well do the 1980's era Macs hold up? I know there's a few models like the 4275 and 4280 that are not well received. Thanks!

Congrats! You done good. Send it to Terry for a a recap, cleaning, new long-life bulbs and alignment and it will be good for another 25+ years. The MAC4200 is the best looking of the vintage receivers.
 
I think you've got yourself a nice piece of gear there. Like the last person said, invest in a once over from Terry DeWick, and you'll be happy for a very long time.
 
Congratulations on your find. I'm with the others in thinking it would be a wise investment to send it off for a recap at the very least.
 
I have never investigated having a 25-30 year old device serviced but I do know there have been some significant technology improvements since then which are included in new modern units.

When talking McIntosh, 25 yo is practically a "youngster". :D
 
Congrats on your first, and undoubtedly not last piece of McIntosh gear! I'm sure you will love it! I had a 4100 for a while and enjoyed it! Until the separates bug bit me ;-) I do remember reading a post by Terry where he stated that most if not all 4100's and later receivers have lots of life left in the caps so if the tuner is working well and the amplification stage sounds good then I'd just leave it for the time being...

I would just add the tuner is almost guaranteed to need alignment if it has never been done, at the very least. I recently had the similar MAC 4300 which was slightly later unit and the tuner was waaay off...
 
I'd be inclined to agree with my esteemed friend above! The tuner will most likely need work...that is if you use it :smoke:

Hey Queenluvr77, how are you liking your 4200? I've got one and use it everyday. I recently changed the batteries inside so that I could used the tuner presets. Give us an update!
