Picked up a NEAT little turntable today. NEAT P-58H to be exact

There’s not a lot of info on these out on the worldwide interweb so I thought I’d ask you folks about it.

It’s a NEAT P-58H and it’s in great shape. The idler wheel is soft and supple and all 4 speeds look to be spinning just fine. The deck is mounted on a custom wood plinth which I think looks pretty nice. It came with a Shure M212 tonearm and an M21 Cartridge fitted with an N21D stylus. I played a test record on it and I gotta say, it sounds pretty good. The custom plinth looks well built and seems to provide a good solid, motion and resonant free foundation for the turntable. The rubber slip mat needs to be replaced as it is cracked and brittle but aside from that and maybe an oiling, this TT looks ready to rock!

Only thing I don’t like is that there is no stroboscope or leveling bubble. Even if there was a bubble I’m not sure how I would adjust the table height, I’ll have to take a closer look at the plinth because I did notice it has some sort of legs that might be adjustable. Here are some photos:

As it stands now I don’t think it’s daily driver worthy either. I might look for a mono cartridge and make this a mono table, then in the future possibly replace the tonearm. It’s a rock solid table, a lot of heft and drive and very good low end and it gets up to speed pretty quickly and stays there. It may have potential for daily driver duty down the road.

Obviously it's your TT and you can do what you like....
.....but I think swapping out the tonearm would be a real shame.

Imo, the TT is beautiful as-is.
The tonearm is seriously cool.

I agree. The tonearm is a thing of beauty. If I did swap out the tonearm I would make a seperate armboard to make switching back and forth easier. @elcoholic I’m eying a denon da-304. I like the simple and elegant look of it.

Have a few NEAT tables, arms and cartridges. My 68H with G-15 arm hold up very nice against some of my better idlers, think TD-124. I think this brand falls under the radar from both a quality and price standpoint. In other words they are still a bargain. They are also sold under the Channel Master name and a few others as well. I get the impression they had more distribution in Canada then they had in the US.

I have yet to pit it up against my TD-124 mki (which is in need of a new stylus) but I would say the NEAT definitely holds it’s own against it. The motor on the neat looks well built. I don’t have any experience tinkering with TT’s but judging just from the feel of the speed selector mechanism and the sound I’m getting out of it, I’d venture to say the NEATS were made to compete with the contemporary idlers of the day i.e. Garrards and Thorens etc. Once I get a new stylus on the td-124 I’ll put them head to head
