Pickering V-15/ATE-3 Cart

Is the Pickering V15/ATE-3 Cart any good?

I want to know if it is worth getting a needle for it.

Is it in the same league as the Pickering XSV cart with the D-3000 needle?:scratch2::scratch2::scratch2: Or even close?? :scratch2::scratch2:

Thanks for your input.

Cheers

Depends.

Any good? Sure. In a league with the XSV? Sorry, no.

Do you have an XSV? If so, that's the one I'd slap a new stylus on.

For the ATE, there's lots of inexpensive styli available of varying quality, but none of them are going to magically transform what's basically an older, inexpensive body.

As always, just my opinion, YMMV.

Not knowing what turntable/arm you are using makes it rather hard to answer your question. Entry level turntables can only give back just so much. The XSV line will require a decent turntable to provide you with all it is capable to give. The 2 cartridges you mention could actually sound the same in a lesser quality (think entry level), turntable.

Thanks for the input thus far.

The turntable I am currently using is a JVC QL-Y66F.

And yes, I'm using the XSV there as well as the original MC Audio Technica/JVC branded cart.

If it is not worth getting a new needle for it, I would give it to my nephew to play around with, as he is using a Mitsu DP-EC7 TT right now with a mediocre cart.

Cheers

You could get a conical for it like a V15AM and use it for older less than perfect Lp's or 45's and the AM stylus isn't as heavy a tracker. I'm speaking of the genuine pickering V15AM. I have a generic V15AM and it's nice stylus. got it on ebay for 7 dollars and i track mine at around 2 to 2.5 grams. I have the same table by the way and I use my AM with a stanton Gold boded 500

I have a V15 body and got a Stanton D71EE stylus for it; essentially the same as a 500E mkII now. Very nice sounding, should be a good match for the DP-EC7 medium mass tonearm.

The D71EE would be a nice upgrade over the stock ATE3 stylus. THere were many sub-models of the V15, but the only real difference between them was the stylus. You can take any number of better stylii and plug into that body and get a better setup. My own AC3, which was a heavy tracking conical, now uses either a D71EE or a D5E stylus.

I've also done exactly that. I took an old V15 and added a new (generic) D71EE. It did improve the sound quite a bit, but it still wouldn't compare favorably to an XSV no matter what TT you put it in. I ended up selling it to another AKer, who presumably is happy with it.

I salvaged one of that exact cartridge from the Dual changer on a Sony all-in-one. It is now on an Elac 50H on which was mounted a new, but cheap (yellow stylus grip) Audio Technica. I've never liked Audio Technica so it had to go and since a V15 ATE was changer oriented, the choice was logical.

I very much like Stantons therefore Pickerings the V15 is tracking happily at the lower end of the ATE's 2 to 5 gram tracking force range and I'm happy with how it sounds.

My only "complaint" is I was unable to leave in place the Dust o Matic brush attached to the NOS stylus I got. Elac's headshell design prevents proper motion of the brush so I must use it brush-less.
