picking up cb through my stereo, what's up with that?

ever hear of the two antennas that got married... the ceremony was a little dull, but the reception was excellent :D

We first have to know if the OP's interference is CB or amateur ops. If the interference is coming from an illegally boosted CB rig, the guy had better be cool about it.

There's no question but that the HAM would be a perfect gentleman as all hams are wont to be...

Whether or not the FCC "cares" about KW operators in the CB bands, they still do take complaints seriously, don't they?

easy fix, where's my pin cushion?:D

OUCH!

Back when me and my buddies rented a party house in Cleveland we had an understanding with our neighbor - we put up with his hugely illegal cb bleeding through the stereo, tv, clock radio, and phone and he put up with the stereo all night while drunken people both upchucked and fell out the second floor window :D

Ed in TX and DC have some very good tips. Unfortunatley you have a bad problem on your hands. I'm a Ham op too and it can be a headache for you and the radio enthusiast.
Usually CBers won't admit to running high power coz they know they're illegal. Their problem is running a modified CB into a linear and overmodulation which splatters all over the radio spectrum. They like a real loud signal and don't understand the drawbacks of their maladjusted setup. If he cooperates and tries to help you, then you can resolve your problem.
The speaker leads are great antennas for the CB band.

Good luck

Fred

When you used the word "illegal, I thought you were talking about law enforcement and that's who would handle it.

Well, it is illegal to operate a "linear" on CBs regardless if the FCC actively pursues it or not.

My dad was a long-haul driver for many years and left me a linear that I played with on and off when I was younger. It was just a small one, 100 or 200W, I think. It stopped working a long time ago and never bothered to have it repaired, eventually tossed it out.

It generated lots of harmonics that weren't filtered out so bleed to other channels was often pretty bad. That sort of unfiltered harmonics was/is pretty common with those things in general, afaik.

Don't get me wrong, i'm all for diplomacy first. But, back in the day there were as many asshats as there were reasonable and respectable folks on the air in this area. In my neck of the woods, most of the asshats wouldn't key up with any significant power until they were good and sloshed, then came the electronic birds and other noisemakers. Thankfully, for the asshats smart enough to keep their coax runs out of reach, Daisy made steel darts for their .177 cal pellet rifles/pistols.

I never really understood the need for big power in my area anyway, just a few watts on a properly placed and tuned moonrakerIV can talk the world in good conditions.

A responsible radio amateur will be as concerned about the RFI he causes as are the folks receiving it, and will find a remedy quickly.

Just my .02...............

well here's the update. it wasn't really a problem in my initial post because it was usually in the morning, now it's at night when i listen to the stereo and it's coming over my music. i told my neighbor and his buddy and was given the "go f yerself" treatment, in a nice way though. around here it's not the best idea to get into it with the neighbors so i guess i'll have to eat this one. there were some posts here on how to fix it from my end so i'll have to go back through.

The few times I've been bothered by Ham or CB, whatever it was, was always through the power amp. Never the pre-amp, or sources. I never had a chance to figure out a fix, maybe because the offender did.

Hopefully I'm not talking out of my arse here.....

Do you have any length of your speaker wire or signal cables wrapped into a circular formation due to extra length.

I've read that it can create an antennae of sorts and pick up different radio frequencies.

If you have that condition try changing it. It's free and can't take more than a few minutes.

I was at a funeral once where a PA system was in use and I sh**-you-not; Eye of the Tiger came over the loudspeakers for it's entirety at a volume level where everyone in the church could hear it. Two other songs came over the speakers too during the service.

It made the funeral quite an emotional rollercoaster!!:tears::banana:

Back in the 70's I was picking up CB through my phono cartridge. (If I disconnected the RCA's from my Thorens into the preamp it would disappear, even if I left the preamp in phono mode). This went on for a few weeks, and I finally found out his name. I got his address and called him. At first, he denied it was him until I had him come over and listen to a cassette that I had recorded from an album with his voice all through the tape. After I reminded him that he was in violation of federal law, he volunteered to put a filter on his transmitter or antenna, and that stopped the bleed-through.

If he is running "Legal" power 4watts max, there is nothing you can do about it, FCC States if your device is accpeting RFI its your job to take care of it.

Just like if your neighbors TV was causing RFI, your woulnt expect him to shut it off just because you want to listen to the radio/stereo, why shoud it be any different with a CB Radio? or Ham Radio?

Now keep in mind I said "Legal" if he is running more than 4watts then he has to fix the problem himself, OR THE FCC WILL TAKE CARE OF IF FOR HIM.

The FCC is more apt to respond if you tell them the interference is effecting your over the air TV.

Buddy of mine had to resort to the pin in the coax trick with a jerkw*d neighbor many years ago.

Except he used a fine needle and cut it off right at the insulation, so the clown couldn't find it. Not only did it trash his transmitter, he had to throw out about 150 feet of very expensive cable.

And the guy never did it again.
