First, my appologies for the quality of pics.

Second, this was given to me by a very close friend, it was his fathers. His father was a collector extraordinaire. He played a stand up Bass and enjoyed playing Bluegrass. 3 years ago he succumbed to lung cancer and passed away. He was one of kind. He left behind a lifetime of collections, ranging from accordions to violins, player pianos and stereos. This Elac is a very small reminder of his taste for quality and his eye for a good deal. Unfortunately, there's no way to know the history behind this TT, as well as so many other things he left behind. :tears:

Enjoy the pics! :thmbsp:

Congratulations! Very nice gift. There are a lot of Miracord fans around here.

I refurbed (a little) a 40A last year, and have REALLY been enjoying it. The build quality kind of reminds me of a German car from the 60s.

Interesting quote cuz I get that sort of feeling around them too. That sense that they came from another part of the world from a time when that meant other parts of the world were unlike where you come from.
That's a clumsy sentence, but I'm with ya.

Good points, all! The more I look at this marvel, the more in love with I am. Being a machinist, I really appreciate the amount of "people power" that went into producing products of this quality. The walnut plinth is soooooo nice!

No kidding. Once upon a time when you were looking at gear (cars, stereos, watches, cameras, etc.) from England, Germany, Switzerland, U.S., etc., they had a certain *look* about them that made their origin immediately known.

Nice turntable and pics. I often wonder are those Miracords gonna be the next turntable that someone discovers after building a plinth and changing the arm that they rank up there with the replinthed Lencos and such?

Elac and PE seem to be the unrecognized changers. I've never been a changer lover due to the use of pucks but the Elacs of all makes I think was the champion in terms of the mechanics, motor, etc. The 50HII was towards the last and came out about the time of the Garrard Lab 80 but its production run continued long after the 80 was history. The 10 had a lifespan from mono through not long before Elac stopped selling in the US.

The arms look like bricks but in their day well handled the best of what was out there.

Hey all, I learned today that a coworker has a Miracord 10 stashed that was given to him by his dad many years ago. Small world. He copied the owners manual for me. Now to decide on a cartridge and some interconnects. :music:

What Cartridge is on that it looks like maybe an Empire 4000D? If you could find a new stylus it would probably sound nice. I have a 50H and I found that shures and stantons sound good. I used an empire a while back I liked that too, I wish I could get a new stylus for it cheaply. For interconnects I use (don't laugh) Monster cable 250 balanced cable.

Hello fdrennen,
As it turns out the cart is a Pickering U38. I've located on the bay some stylii for that particular cart, but I need to decide whether I want to replace the cart or not. I need to replace the RCA ends on the interconnects first however. I will be posting my results when I can get to the repairs, hopefully sooner than later.
Thanks for the link!

Miracord/ Ortofon

I recently purchased two Miracord 40 H's. both had Ortofon Spu Stereo cartridges on them and the cartridges I have come to find out are pricey. Sold both Cartridges for 1200.00 with the little square transformers the trans would seperate from the cartridge. What a find. Not bad for a 150.00 Investment.
