I bought this one at SA and plugged it home,and it was working,not only that but sounded excellent,garrard changer was semi shot,and i had no intention to restore it,but amp is great sounding mono piece,with aux,riaa,lp inputs,has to oxfor speakers,and extension speaker can be attached,pre has 3 Mullard 12ax7,2 6v6 for power,altogether fun to listen with Stephens 122ax speaker in huge bass reflex cab i belive original from fifties,whole amp part i hacked off frome the rest ,wrapped in black tolex,vox guitar amp handle on the top,grill sprayed gold and other cosmetics,i try to post pics later on,aux with cd player sounds exellent,but when hooked few of my turntables i get kind thin sound,like not enough gain,can anybody advice wht is wrong,preamp tube?resistors or caps?thanks for any input,also can play electric guitar through it,read that Buddy Holly"manager bought 3 of thaes when they came out,thanks

Do you still have the old record changer? See what kind of cartridge was in there. I'm taking a guess that it was a ceramic cartridge. If so, then you'll get weak sound from a magnetic cartridge. Ceramics are basically line level, no standard phono stage. If it was a mag cartridge on the original, are you connecting the turntable to the phono input or the aux input ?
Could be, but more likely its a connection problem inside. Try switching the 12AX7 tubes around to see if anything changes.
Those old GE cartridges had a fairly hot output, so just be aware that it may not get as loud with a modern cartridge. Should still do OK but there may be a difference. Hang on to that old cartridge though. They do very nicely for 78 rpm service. Any changer that had one originally is probably also decently suited for 78 duty. I'm guessing it may be an RC88. Pilot used those a lot, along with the goofy proprietary round plug to control the amp's power switching.

I switched tubes and no change,now there is loud chopper like hum and you can hear tiny whine of record play,i need to take it apart and look at phono section which is hanging on selector switch?(eico hf-85? same story),otherwise cd's play great through aux,here are some pictures of it,its not hi fi monster,but nice toy i like to play with,thanks for all help

i found the problem,it was turntable,i had my thorens td-124 with esl tonearm and shure cart hooked to the amp,that set up is ongoing restoration effort for over a year and i think tonearm needs to be rewired,i hooked different turntable and it plays ok,so amp is all good,thanks for good word

Hello again,have problem with that amp,I tried to use it as a guitar amp and it played quite nice,I tried crank it to see if it will produce any distortion,turned volume all the way and played nice,after a while volume dropped down,wondered what happened, today tried it again, both 6v6 are dead,I put two new GT 6v6's but only one lit,did guitar stressed this amp?it is phonograph amp any clues?thanks
