Pink Floyd Dark Side Of The Moon MFSL

I have the SACD of DSOTM. The clocks ticking description sounds like what you'd hear on this release.

Picked it up for $9 used plus FCM shipping. Not something I would find in any of the thrifts I frequent.

LOVE all MFSL Pink Floyd CDs!! As a matter of fact, I love all MFSL CDs!! They just make me happy to just see them in my cd rack!! I got into it in the beginning and just love the way they sound.

Listening to a 1974 R2R version now & it sounds great. You can't have too many versions of DSOTM.

There is more to pink floyd a well as other bands.
You will not get any better information from any outside source.
If you have an album or CD then thats all you need.
Pink Floyd put it all into the original recording and it doesnt get much better.
I have half speed masters and dark side of the moon I can wait for.
It is a great album in any form.

Hi,

The best "The Wall" on CD is either a European Harvest or a US C2K Columbia. The Mobile Fidelity has the bass EQed high for most needs. The present US Capitol/Harvest CD is also excellent. On LP, I like a UK Harvest or Japanese CBS/Sony pressing best. The USA Columbia LP is excellent in a better pressing.

The British 8-track Quad version is quite the treat, too. Massive separation.

I have a DTS dub that I play in the car on surround.

The Wall is my favorite Pink Floyd album but I also have DSOTM. Like someone earlier said look for the early Japan Black triangle disk.

The Japanese pressing of The Wall is superb.

For me it's a toss-up between the UK Harvest and the 30th anniversary DSOM.
I don't like the Mobile Fidelity Half speed.(I'd love to hear the UHQR).

The WYWH to have is the Japanese CBS Mastersound pressing.

You aint missing much on the UHQR imho. Add a touch more highs at around 3kHz compared to the regular MoFi and perhaps a bit more detail across the frequency range and there you have it for th UHQR. i got it here, opened it up about a decade ago, played it about 5 times, put it back, never playted it again.

The Parsons' I Robot UHQR is really nice tho, very nice imo. UHQR Tea for the Tillerman is also quite good.

i'll stick with my Japanese and original Harvet for DSOTM... and quad when i have that quad feeling :)

Sad fact, i remember the Floyd Quad BOX SET back in the mid 80's. Not enough cash on hand, went home, came back 2 days later with enough cash and it was gone. Never saw another quad box set ever again :(

I have the MFSL and it does sound good. There are early Japanese Dark Side CDs that are rated even better than MFSL.

The 40th Anniversary vinyl release of Dark Side gets very good reviews although there is some sibilance. (I don't own this.) Besides the slight sibilance, it's supposed to be super.

I like the SACD surround a lot, but the best, smoothest sound is the DVD-A Quad mix.

Almost all the Floyd vinyl is gonna be good. For the best, I would recommend the original UK releases in mint shape. I hope u gots lots o' cash. An original UK Dark Side mint just sold for $325 USD.

Im not to thrilled with the MFSL of Dark Side. Its good but too hot. Interesting that these are taken from the masters, they should sound great.

If I have the story somewhere close to correct, the Master Tape of DSOM needs two different equalisation settings one for the mid to high frequencies and one for the mid to low frequencies. Anyone remastering even if they had the original master tape would need to apply the EQ correctly or it won't be a satisfactory result.

I still have a half-speed mastered Steely Dan Gaucho which sounds "better" than the Official release by Steely Dan's record company. The reason why I put better in quotation marks is that the supposed superiority of the remaster is that the kick drum is much more forward in the mix. Well there was no denying that there was more kick drum. The trouble is that when Fagan and Becker heard the replay of the original master tape they complained that the kick drum was too prominent in the mix and asked if it could be toned down in the release to the public. So the upshot is that when the record was being half speed mastered no-one was there to remind about turning the kick drum down. Therefore we end-up with the "improved" sound of the half speed mastered record.
