Pink Floyd Showing Its Age...

Or I am.

We had my kids and several of their friends over for dinner this evening. My son didn't want his steak so I said to him, "If you don't eat your meat you can't have any pudding. How can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat." Silence and blank stares from my son (15) and his friends, and my daughter (23) and her friends. (My wife got it.)

They do know that Pink Floyd was a band (edgy according to my son), and no one asked, "By the way, which one's Pink."

It's you. You've got to quote what the audience knows if you want them to get it.

Quoting bits of Shakespeare or Yeates or Pliny will get a blank look from me.

My 14 year old daughter seems to know all the lyrics from DSOTM, and many if not most from The Wall. She and her friends are totally into "classic rock", and constantly grilling me on various things ("When did you see Clapton?", "Was Pink Floyd good live?" etc.). Totally perplexing, I have no idea how this happened - I never pushed it on her (if anything, I pushed Beethoven and Bach - she's a pianist).

Tell me is something eluding you sunshine?

I hate when that happens. But that quote is more obscure than others; I'm 54 and know people my age who never picked up on that one. My niece and nephew now 25 and 23 are well versed on a lot rock from 1962 to 1986 since I made a point of always playing it since they were about 12. When she was 15 I bought her Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, CDs etc for gifts (at the time she was doing the rap thing). My nephew got stuff like Triumph, Frampton, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Nazareth. My brother and I always had the classic rock radio stations playing and it rubbed off. I would work quotes into the conversation just like you on a regular basis. I remember playing Stayin' Alive by The Bee Gees and Play That Funky Music by Wild Cherry, Joplin etc. for my niece when she was 15 and you could see it literally grab her and she was blown away, she loved it. It's funny how now that they've grown up the rap and hip hop has fallen off and they both love vintage rock, a screaming guitar and vintage stereo gear. Whenever they visit I still literally make a point of takin' care of business by blasting something out on one of my rigs.:D

Get a good DVD copy of "Pulse" and show it in a system with lots of clean, nice power, and a big screen TV, and a dark room. She will see how they were Live. That is a most impressive concert.

Enjoy,
Rich P

Wasn't aware of that DVD, will get a copy. I saw them on the DSOTM tour, in Charlotte in March 1973. It was a memorable experience, even tho I don't remember much else from that time period....

Hello hello ... is there anybody out there?

Try quoting something the current gen can appreciate ... maybe some Led Zeppelin? If they still look confused, tell them that LZ was The Black Keys grand daddies ... <G>

Nope. Has more to do with the audience than the age of the music. Pink Floyd still gets plenty of airplay, at least around here.
You can't really blame them though, there's a lot more music to listen to now.
