Pioneer C-72 having trouble getting audio out

So, I recently acquired a Pioneer C-72 pre-amp and a DBX BX3 power amp. I'm trying to hook up this new system and I've having an issue. For the pre-amp output I have the option of "Fixed" or "Variable" Outputs. I can only get the unit to output using the fixed ouput - which isn't what I want since the main purpose of a pre-amp in my system is to control the volume. I"m using a chromecast as a source that is confirmed working.

Anyone have some experience with this era of pioneer gear? Am I missing a switch or having some sort of input voltage mismatch somewhere? It seems really odd that I can still get sound out but only in this "fixed" mode.

Thanks in advance

and a big fat never mind on this one. There is a very small, very hard to see (in dim light at least) mute switch. Problem solved. Volume control engaged.
