Pioneer Collection - Should I go for it, or pass it up?

Are any of these units worth spending "A LOT" of time to restore? This is a collection that was kept in an outside shed for 15+ years and so you can imagine the condition but most of these units turn on and lights work. The speaker cabinets have some issues (could be fixed) and all drivers look ok except for the 15" woofers which are in need of new surrounds and are moving freely. I can get the whole deal for $300. I'm not sure if I have the time and patience for this project so maybe I could pass it on to someone who really needs some of this to complete projects. Let me know thoughts on this.

Do you guys see all the rust and pitting on the cases????? You still think it is worth something????? It looks like a lot of work though. I tend to favor the older units with wooden enclosures and not the rack style equipment, maybe that is my problem with jumping here. I just don't know..
 
It depends on what you want to do with it. You could easily make some cash parting everything out.

I would open up the cases and inspect the guts. They may not be as bad as they look.

Those super tweeters are probably worth a couple hundred bucks alone if they are in working condition. Re-foamed woofers are worth a couple hundred each.

Complain about the rust and offer less.

Would be some work...but if your the type, you could probably resell for at least the asking price, and maybe more. They don't look like much, but those are some good units. Honestly though, its really up to personal choice, and if your not into them, let someone else have them, and enjoy what you really want:yes:. (I will agree, I perfer the wooden enclosure over rack, anytime of the week)
 
Looks like a lot of work and headaches.. I'd hate to see what the insides and the heads of that RTR looks like seeing how badly corroded the head block is..
 
HPM-150's easily command in excess of $500 in full working order. If all they need is surrounds that's not too bad.
 
The equalizer with the rack shelf is probably worth $300. With a little bit of work you could have the beginnings to a really nice set up. All you need is an SA-9800 or SA-8800 and you'd be all set.

I've seen the rack adapters for the tuner, reverb, and range expander go for over $100 per pair on the bay.

I would look around wherever this stuff was and see if there is a rack laying around. More than likely everything was mounted in a Pioneer rack.
 
I'd run away. Corrosion like that on painted metal means even worse stuff inside on the unpainted chassis, electrical, and rolling elements. This a nightmare waiting to spring to life, I'm afraid. Looks like a sea coast unit here.

Not just that, looking at the pictures again, it was used in a factory, probably meaning its had a very hard life...I doubt it was in the breakroom. And honestly, with all the corrosion it's probably not worth it. I have a tube radio chassis downstairs which was completely trashed by corrosion to the point where it's not worth any of the effort to restore:no:.
 
Nothing in those photo's would lead me to think they were used in a factory. The fact they are sitting on a pallet in a building with warehouse type doors only means that is where it is now. This could be a business that resells it could be a recycle center it could be where the owner works and a few dozen other possibilities.

I seriously doubt any sound system put in a factory or other commercial business is going to have a Range Expander or a Reverb amp! Or a R2R deck. This looks to be like almost every other Pioneer System like this is something a guy in the Military brought home.



Without looking inside the gear guessing at their condition is just that only a guess. The cases could easily look the way they do if only from a metal roof sweating on them a few times and the water drops standing in place until the paint give up. Without any mositure ever entering the insides.

If the Aluminum faceplates are at all damaged past dirty the resale value of the gear is shot. And they become parts units.

As parts units the purchase price could easily be recouped and profit made. But it would be a lot of work.
 
I have an old Marantz receiver ( SR 325) that I use for testing speakers and other stuff. If someone saw it sitting somewhere,they would probably pick it up and throw it away. It looks like it went through a war and lost. Has had battery acid spilled on the front among other things. It actually sounds better now than it did when new in 1985. can't always judge a book by it's cover.
 
The 3 sets of rack handles, the rack tray, and the hubs on the RTR will bring in over $300 by themselves, rust, or no rust. The cases on the equipment can be stripped, 386'd (corrosion dissolver), and re-painted with a nice powder paint. If I was close, I'd grab it and make a few bucks on it myself.
