Pioneer Component Serial Numbers

Dr. Strangelove said:
My data shows the SX-1250 being produced from 76 thru 78.

V would put yours in 75. Possible letters for the year are:

Code:
V	W	X	Y
75	76	77	78

A scratch thru any of these letters could make it look like a V, or it could actually be a V.

With a month of A, that would be January 75, a full year earlier than my data. Still, it could be possible.

It has to be a Y if it's not likely to be a V. The scratch is right through the middle of the first digit, vertically. I don't see two bottom sections of the W or X, so it must be Y.

The purpose is two-fold. First, the first two letters of the component will identify the year and month of manufacture, which helps many determine when their components were made, and helps fill in gaps in the database where we have no documentation or catalogs to identify the year/month of the component.

Second, it helps as a method to record ones serial numbers for safe keeping in case of theft, and to identify if a seller on ebay is using someone else's photos. We should even record the serial number of components found on ebay, if we can, to see trends in the same component showing up over and over on ebay.

BTW, welcome to AK.

edit: Also, some of us (me) had hoped that a broad collection of serial numbers might lead to some understanding of the numbers other than the first two characters. For example, how many of a particular model were made.

...and I thought I knew it all... ;) I didn't know that the serial number identifies the production date. That little piece of info could've come in handy on numerous occassions!

I'll work on putting mine together and get it added to the list. I have a few older pieces, I guess they're all old now: SX 3400, RH-65, AKAI GX-630G, PL-530, VSX-D1S, CR-777, PD-F907, CT-WM77R, PD-TM2, PL-670, Bose 501 Series IV a couple of infinitys and some other goodies here and there.

Thank you for the welcome. This site appealed to me at first glance, I knew I had to join.
