Pioneer CS-05’s

turnitup

No, the stereo won’t break the crystal...Oh CRAP!
I just acquired a minty set of Pioneer CS-05’s (the round coffee table speakers). I know that they’re crap on the sound side, but they DO have that 70’s vibe thing going for them.

From the posts that I have read, it sounds like it is best to not try to dissect these little guys because on their construction method (I.e. they’re a bitch to take apart). Having just replaced the surrounds on some CS-88A’s (I know, another mediocre set - but they too are lookers), I’m trying to find out if the 05’s tweeters have cloth surrounds, or are they going to be rotted foam as well? Really hoping for cloth, but I haven’t come across any postings that cover the topic.

Does anyone know what the tweeter surrounds are made of???

Thanks for the help!

Last year I saw a set of those for sale locally but the seller would only sell them in a set of 4 and wanted way too much. I kept looking and eventually found the Optimus 6s. I loved them so much as speaker stands I found two more earlier this year.

Who cares if they dont sound good, when refinished they will look great!

The tweeters are just paper cones. Nothing sophisticated about them like high compliance (foam) surrounds.

Your assessment of how they sound is complimentary in my opinion. End tables first - speakers 2nd.

I bought a pair at auction.a few years ago out of curiosity. One of the worst speakers I've ever heard. Sold them pretty quick though, purely because of their looks.

Wow, I had low expectations, but these set a new low bar! They’ll be unplugged and used for speaker stands. Feel bad that I wasted $4 on new caps for them (guess I can always re-harvest)!
