Pioneer CS-1 anyone know anything about them?

I've never seen or heard of these speakers. But there's a pair on marketplace near me right now. Last thing in the world I need right now is to buy another pair of speakers. Does anyone know if these are super rare? I see no information on. The web. Wierd.

I'm not familiar with them, but based on the grille style and description, I'm going to guess that they're Pioneer Kabukis and not worth anywhere near that amount (or your time).

Well I think I figured it out. I think they are actually CS-901. And the person described them as CS-1. Crap.

The cabinets really didn't look big enough to do justice to a 15" woofer. The picture without the grille confirms it.

Well I went and bought them. They are in fantastic shape. And I personally think they sound very good. I have them hooked up to my Onkyo TX-4500 MKii. They sound real good and have plenty of bass. These were from an estate sale. Had been in a basement for years and not being played.

Recap them... I’ve have a number of the CS series, including the 99A’s (no 901’s though). Honestly (brutally honest), they all look much better than the sound, but the furniture appeal is truly there! That being said, they do tend to hold or appreciate in value, and if you recap them, they sound MUCH better - kind of like removing a blanket that has been covering them. Use decent poly caps, Dayton (Parts Express) or the like are reasonably priced for the application. Those super tweeters (same as used on the 99A’s) go bad occasionally. Use a paper towel tube to make sure each are functioning.

Hit them with some Howard’s and some furniture oil, and you’ve got an amazingly beautiful set of speakers. Hope you enjoy them!

I am not kidding here. I've got a bunch of speakers. And bought and sold a decent amount of them too. I honestly don't think these even need caps. I'm listening to them with this Onkyo and they really sound great. But I will do some caps on them. Just in case. As far as Howard's. These are in great shape. I just hit them with Old English and they look great. They look like they are 2 years old. I'm very happy with them and enjoying them. Thanks for the positive remarks. Also if they have Lo-Med-Hi pots on the back, clean them with some deoxit then work them back and forth 30-40 times to make sure they have good contact. The higher end CS series (which these are) tend to use a LOT of caps. A separate cap for each of the settings on the pots, which can get a little pricey. Not sure about the 901’s, but the 99As have a TON of caps in them. I had to build a separate board for all of the caps because the replacements are physically much larger than the originals, but also exponentially better than the originals (in my opinion).

Thanks, my 99A’s were my first pair of speakers I bought new in High School in the 70’s, so I’ve got an attachment to them! Yes, yours do look day one new! Beautiful!

I checked all speakers when I bought them except the super tweeters. So I just checked them now. One speakers has both working. One speakers has neither working. Im not really too worried about them. I wonder if my 60 year old ears hear them. But I'll check ebay. I think I saw some there earlier today..Would be nice to have everything working properly. I already have been inside both speakers so I know theybare hooked up. I did find the wires for the mid horn unhooked in one and hooked it back up. I am playing Led Zeppelin hits right now and these sound fantastic. Plenty of bass. Plenty. I dont even have the bass control all the way up. I love them.

Valuable monetarily, but so many other better options out there for the equivalent $. I’ll always keep mine just for sentimental reasons, but honestly rarely use them. Like you, I’ve got a LOT of speakers too...just love to rebuild and refurbish the classics. Great hobby, but it’s really dried up out here (availability wise). Hopefully St. Louis has better offerings!

Yeah I'm sure in your area everyone has been selling these for years and years. I've gotten a little lucky lately. I'm telling you. These are not meh on performance. These are sounding excellent.

If you’re lucky, it might just be the pots that are keeping the super-tweeters from working...

I took the back off earlier. I cleaned the pots. I'll check that speaker again tomorrow. Take the back off again. Make sure a wire didn't come loose puttingnit back on or anything. Maybe clean those pots again. I guess I did it right. I have not really had to clean that many pots.

Run an ohm meter on the tweeters, maybe an easier/cheaper fix than having to replace them. I think mine are blown too...I worked them over pretty hard in HS and college at KU!

I love the old Pioneer CS speakers. Many are very efficient and work well with tube amps. I imagine older cap coupled amps would work well too.
