Pioneer CS-53 - good or bad?

Does anyone know what these are like? There's a pair for free, but it's a 60 mile round trip. I'm not sure whether to risk it.

I've heard bad things about the CS series (and owned a few of the newer CS's, which were awful), but this seems like an older model.

Thanks.

that's ok 2-mas, my info is from 1997 Orion, it's been known to be wrong before.

Thanks for the info. If they were only $90 new, chances are these really aren't a great pair of speakers.

just got a pair thrown in with a 20$ technics SA 404 purchase. I should have left them at the sellers' home.

My first real experience with the saying - just because it is old, doesn't mean it is worth something.

I know this is an old post, but the question is timeless. I'm surprised by some of the responses. I put these in the same category as my EPI 100's. Simple 2-way design with a single cap x-over. Great for "room" volume rock-'n-roll. Oddly, the EPI's get great reviews. The Pioneer's actually have a bit more bass (probably) due to the 12" woofer.

Totally agree. I own a pair and actually really like them. They were made for about 8 years so that says something.

If y'all are enjoying them, your all set. I recommend that you keep climbing the ladder though since you can do better. Enjoy the music! :music:

It's been bothering me for over a year. Some nights I wake up screaming after dreaming about what you posted!

But seriously, thanks for the follow up. I consider AK one of the best resources for all things audio and think accurate info is one of AK's strongest attributes for those seeking info about audio.

I love mine, sound is expansive and room filling, voices are clear and realistic, detail is there, treble nicely balanced to my ears. The most immersive speakers I have.

I have a pair, made in Belgium, and I can only get them to sound decent with a certain old solid state amp. Anything else they just suck. I really wonder if there are variations of the same speaker out there, different woofers or other parts? People either love them or hate them. I think if you were come over and listen to mine you'd find them different than yours. There is no way someone could listen to mine with most of my amps and say, "these sound great"
