What is considered a decent price for a pair of CS-88A's in good shape cosmetically and functionally?

Thanx,
Nud

Personally, they are only worth as little as I can pay and make a buck off a flip...

There are a lot better sounding speakers out there to spend your money on. Too boomy/muddy of a speaker for me. I do like the horn in them though...

With that said, I don't think I'd pay more than about $30 for a pair, and then I'd hope to get $45 off them...

There not that bad of a speaker. Lacking of bass is a problem. But I matched my pair with a Realistic STA 2100 receiver and with a little tweaking of an equalizer I got them to sound pretty decent. I paid only $45 for mine, but there in fair shape. Expect rotting around the surrounds of the tweeters which is a major problem. There is a thread on AK on how to fix them and recap them.

Kabuki speakers are okay as long as you don't pay too much for them.

I sold the last pair I had for $195. They were, however in fabulous shape, and the sale was through eBay. I paid $15 for them.:thmbsp:

That's what I figured. I see a pair for 3-bills and I figured that was way out of line.

Thanx

I paid $15 for mine that were in about as perfect condition as I've ever seen and I sold them for $75 locally.

I had them mated with a nice Technics SA 505 receiver and that was a match made in heaven.

I had a pair in bad shape. I pulled the components thinking I'd make some money selling them....... apparently, not even the parts are desirable.

Unfortunately, none of the above responses actually address the original question - what is the price of CS-88A (if in very good condition).

The answer is on eBay. The last top three sales show that the current market value is between $400-600 (with shipping, not mint, $400 pair is probably only in average condition).

Actually, you could derive the market value from AK responses too, just multiply these $15-30 by 20 and you get $300-600 which is about right.

I agree, random components should not be that desirable. Only complete set - cabinets and lattice grills a must! As a collector, I need a complete, original, non-abused, non-modified set.

Perhaps you missed my response. :thmbsp:
I quoted what my last pair sold for on eBay.
And, as stated they were in near mint condition.

Since just about everything breaks over time, my theory is that if something is desirable, then the parts should also be. A lot of times, things can be worth more parted out, than whole.

Speaking of Pioneer CS-series value, their TOTL brother CS-99A sold today $760 + $120 shipping = $880.
Here is the eBay link

And this pair (not mine) is not even mint. From seller description:
Walnut veneer that has some wear from time which is normal. There are some water spots, paint specks, and scratches. Dings to edges, corners.

How much would be for CS-99A in true close-to-Mint condition? With good description and close-up pictures, my guess is above $1,000, believe it or not.

What is this..the twilight zone?..88a's,played thru proper vintage units are an extraordinary broad range speaker..I've had L100's,Legacy's..sp-x's and 17's and I've kept the 88a's..if you run NAD dung thru them, they're no big deal..thru a Sansui 1000a or a 5000x they are great..Brubeck to King Crimson..they are very nice and extremely well built..and to say their worth $50-$60 is a joke..I paid $200 for mine 6 yrs. ago and wouldn't sell them now for under 4..obv.you need a good room too..the tweeter surround repair couldn't be easier: Dap clear kitchen and bath caulk..goes on white..dries clear,a light bead and run your finger around it..yee-ha!..set it-forget it.

Sansui 1000a-5kx-800-400-Sony 7065a-Fisher 450t-Kenwood 11-6200-kr-77-2 Laffy lr1500ta's-Revox g36-Dynaco A35's-Marantz's everywhere

Regardless of what they sell for in other markets, they seem to sell for $50-$75 in Dallas, with an occasional $100 pair or the $15 GW find every now and then...

Yea, imagine my suprise when I looked up what cs-99as were worth after i got them for free. Just had to take the ugly trashed oprimus-800s too. They all fit in my jeep wrangler along with the pioneer tx 737 i was able to get for 20. Storage unit auctions rule.

The cs-99a's and the 88a's worth are tied to their speaker cones. It has to have the FB stamp on them to get the top prices. I sold mine on Ebay for around $600 and they were not mint. They sounded nice...especially the bass but for $600...see ya!..:) Mine...and I assume most that are bought for big money are going to asia.

Does anyone know if the non-A versions were Japan only? I have CS-88s which look beautiful, and don't sound terrible. I need to tidy them up. If someone in Asia is willing to pay, I would invest the time learning how to pack and ship... They are pretty, though.

What is the significance of the FB mark? My Poineers have it, and I couldn't think of anything the letters stood for...

I sold a pair of CS-88A in mint condition with original boxes about 2 years ago for $150 on ebay. Some guy drove 10 hours to come pick them up. They were non "FB." It is the "FB" driver models that sell for high dollar. I paid $15 for mine locally. Among the worst speakers I have heard, but I do tend to try to pick up good quality speakers, just that these were mint with boxes and I could not pass them up. I would not waste a second on either the model I had or the FB, probably equally bad sounding. Nice '70s look, though, if that is your thing.
