Pioneer CS-88A

I have a set of CS-88a's that were given to me. The lattice grill wood on one speaker is extremely faded and uneven in color. The cabinets themselves are in okay condition with only minimal discoloration. My concern is the lattice grill. Does anyone have any experience with restoring the wood on the lattice? What steps can I take to ensure that the grill wood color will match the cabinets? What color stain will most closely match the Pioneer’s original color? Another concern is access to the lattice wood. The cloth is stapled to the back and I do not want to damage the wood frame. Could these be redone without removing cloth?

Some Liquid Gold or Howards restore-a-finish will darken them up nicely, but for more serious action, if you are that picky and you want the grill and cabinet to match, your in for a treat. You will need to remove backcloth, clean the lattice grill frame and cabinet with murphys oil soap. Re-stain with foam brush using the same stain for lattice then for cabinet. leave stain coating on overnight, then wipe off with a cloth soaked in thinner. Restaining them both is really the only way to make them exactly match, IMO.

I've got time on my hands and will go the whole refinishing route. The grills do look tedious including the removal of clamps holding the bends of the lattice and the detailed outer frame. Should I lightly sand the thin lattice wood or is there a product that will help remove the old finnish?
