Pioneer CS-99a

I picked up a paid of these at the good will today for 25 bucks.
Are they any good? I havent had a chance to hook them up yet to listen.

One of the mids has hole and one has been replaced. Any body know for a source of them.

Here is what they look like mint.

I dont have any tweets in one speaker.
Would that be a toasted cross over or toasted tweets?
There are two small horns and two other ones ( I dont know what kind they are.)

I have the Pioneer CS88a speakers (smaller brother to the speakers that you have).

The CS88a don't sound too bad... a little too heavy in the midrange area for my tastes, but that's me...

The 99s seem to a more loyal following than the 88s do as well.

as far as tweets go, how are the pots in the back? maybe there corroded and not making contact, same thing happened in my ar-3a's, I had to replace the pots with new ones.

try swapping the tweets between each speaker, if it still doesn't work, its not the tweet, you most likely have a bad connection inside somewhere. Not bad looking speakers!

The one that works sounds great. Alot of mids but you can tune it down. And I like alot of mid range.

they are not in prefect shape.
Missing grill cloth
one of the mids has been swapped out. (looking for original )
another one of the mids has a hole in the cone. (thinking about rubber cement as temp patch

And crushed domes. ( i can live with that. )

I got the back off im going to check the switches and see what happens.

I've got a pair of those,I bought 'em at a pawn.I think they sound pretty good for the 50.00 that I spent. David

Dont know if they are still there but I have seen some CS's getting parted out on E-Bay. I have some CS77a's. Had to replace the 3" tweeters with the foam surround. Not a bad sounding speaker, more mids. Good luck.

I checked the horn on one of the mid channels and it works so I think there might be a problem in the cross over.

I checked the rotatry switch and its ok.
So gotta check for caps and open resistors.

I found a bad solder connection, wire's insulation too close to the joint, in my 1966 Fisher, so check all wiring.

I test with a battery and temporarily bypass capacitors with a wire. Get a click or see the cone travel, that means the voicecoil's good anyway. You can also test speakers individually. Use short pulses on tweeters and maybe use a weak battery as well. You can burn out the fine wires in a small tweeter by connecting it for too long to a fresh 9 volt battery. Even a AAA will do for testing.

Digital multimeters are under 10 bucks now, all of us should own one.

I have had a pair of CS-88A and the 99A. They have a common sound, very sweet, musical and open and airy on top. The bass is solid to about 50Hz, then drops slowly to the lower frequencies.
I really really liked these speakers.
The drivers do show up on eBay. WLhen I used to peruse eBay I would see many listed.
Good hunting, the 99A is worth the trouble!

i like 'em

i have a pair of cs-88's and the smaller cs-33's in my garage. i have 40 bucks in both pair (thats 40 TOTAL) and i like 'em. those 99's look good! i'll keep an eye out for some. :thmbsp:
