Pioneer CT-F1000 rewind issue

Hello everyone. I just recently acquired a CT-F1000 with some issues. Main problem was that the Play function would not stay engaged for longer than a few seconds. I bought it knowing about this problem but I really wanted a nice vintage cassette deck to go with my other vintage components. I wanted something with analog VU meters too otherwise I would have gotten a CT-F1250. FF and RW also were sluggish and would stop on longer tapes.

Anyway I am normally fairly handy, and I get along better with electronics than mechanical things, but I traced the problem to some bad belts driving the tape movement sensor attached to the counter. If I rotated the wheel manually the tape would stay playing. So I ordered new belts and the little rubber wheel for the FF/REW motor figuring I would change everything while I was in there.

Took it apart this afternoon and it was relatively painless. A lot of cleaning, replaced the belts and put everything back together. Result, generally a win but I have one nagging problem. All modes work, FF and REW are good and fast and strong (the little clutch was OK on mine, phew) but one weird issue. If I am fast forwarding and i hit Play, it stops immediately and plays. but if I hit Rewind and hit Play while its rewinding, it just ignores it. Completely. If I hit stop it stops fine, then I can hit Play and it will play fine. The issue seems electrical. I really love this deck so far, other than the lack of metal tape ability, but I have a bunch of CR02 tapes which sound nice. I cleaned the tape path completely and demagd the heads and it sounds wonderful. Does anyone have any insight into this problem?

It is supposed to do that so you don't stretch the tape..Look at the brake pads on the supply and take up reels. It should stop reel motion before it engages into play.

Good work so far. Make sure you treat (clean) the switches and controls with Caig DeoxIT D5.

I figured out the rewind issue. Its actually an intended function. I decided to read the owners manual (I know, a concept) and it says that if the memory function is activated, and the system is in rewind mode, and the play button is pressed, play function will activate when the counter gets down to zero. If the memory is off, the play function will activate immediately. I had the memory on when I was playing around. If I turn it off, it works as expected.
