Pioneer ct-f1250 weird voodoo stuff happening

Hey team,
I just got finished servicing my ctf1250 and have come out of the whole thing with a new problem that I dont see posted anywhere. The stop function does not work when pushed! now that i see that it is not a common problem i hope that maybe i just severed a wire while doing my belt change, idler replace and take up motor rebuild. Any suggestions would be helpful im sure because im lost!!
Another separate problem that has come from my tinkering is that now the take up reel is sputtering when in play and ff. the problem goes away when i simply push the tape closer to the unit and starts up again when i take the pressure away,its almost like the take up reel assembly is not getting enough of the tape teeth. Is this a sign of too much torque in the take up reel?

Can't help with stop function, but with the sputtering in play and ff, check that your micro switch is making good contact (staying engaged). When facing front of unit, it's the micro switch at top right of unit above cassette.

Connected mine back up and doubtful that what I asked would be the issue as that would cause the tape to stop. Have you checked the torque on TU Reel? Checked voltages on reel motor? replaced any tantalum caps?

Ok, did a little more work and fixed the stop button not functioning problem. It was a split wire. I measured the torque on the take up real and it was about 30 grams over what it should be on playback and FF. The service manual does not suggests any fixes for this other than getting a new motor....guess there is no way to adjust torque?? as for voltages not sure how to check that and have never replaced a cap before.

I am going to ask the obvious, sorry. Have you tried another tape? Where did you get your belts and are you sure you have correct belts in correct place?

I don't see where it says replace motor. I do see that it says to replace reel base assembly which obviously these are not available. I would go thru, make all adjustments to make sure they were within spec, then if still too much torque remove reel base, take apart (Lots of pictures) clean them up, lube as necessary and start over. Stay in order to the SM.

all the idlers and belts where from Vintage audio online which was mentioned alot on this site as being trustworthy. I guess i read the manual wrong....i stink at reading tech stuff. anyhow i tried the obvious and played another couple tapes and they play much better with no sputtering. weird!! still worries me about the torque being to high but i will play a couple more tapes while hooked up to the receiver and see how it goes wow and flutter wise.

Ok about four tapes deep and this thing really sounds like a dream. No sputter problems yet so keeping my fingers crossed. I forgot to mention i bought this "as is for parts" about a month ago and never heard this unit now, I only heard its brother the CT-f1000. I gotta say it sounds just as good or better. Really rewarding to go through hell with a unit and have it sound awesome in the end. Here's a photo with it joining the team.

Nice setup.
That tape that was sputtering may not have been wound tight, causing it to slip.
