Pioneer CT-F800 - ok to run without idler glide plate?

Is it ok to run the deck without the idler plate or am I headed for problems?

Here's what happened:

Pulled a ctf800 out of storage and had no play/ff/rew. Installed new belts and play works fine, FF was hesitant but working and there was no rew. A new idler wheel and FF was good but still no rewind. After pulling the idler plate out to adjust/inspect the wheel I put a tape in without replacing the plate and it worked great. Full speed rew, ff and play is still smooth. I've gone through a few tapes and haven't noticed any issues yet.

I guess there's an adjustment issue with the plate but so far it seems ok without it.

Sometimes rigs like that may work but is tearing up stuff in the process. Kind of like when I thought "any ol belt" should work in a walkman. I ordered and put in the proper belt before ant real damage happened though.
It may be better to put the deck aside until you can figure out what the exact problem is.
I do not know enough about the specifics of decks to get more detailed than that.

Does it have this problem with all tapes? Sometimes if you get a "problem tape" in there, the deck shows it's weaknesses.
