Pioneer DSS dual voice coil hookup?

Of course! They are the actual woofers from the DSS-9, just reconed and refoamed. But otherwise the same, which means DVC ;) And MASSIVE magnets!

Sweet! Since I'm just having issues with just the one woofer, I suppose I wouldn't need to send in both for recones if the PG cone is identical. Otherwise I'd send both to be matched. I'm also very impressed with the heft of these woofers, even with the stamped DSS7 vs cast frame of the DSS9. The huge magnets dwarf my cast framed HPM-900!

Is there a visible crack of any sort in the cone of the woofer that makes the noise? If not, I'm not sure what benefit you would get from reconing them. In my case I had no choice, the cones were cracked.

No cracks that I can see! It's really bizarre. Maybe I'll just leave it as is. My only guesses are something in the voice coil or its just the sound of the spider flexing? I have aligned the cone three times, still the same sound. I figured perhaps it would be solved by a recone, if the spider and voice coils are replaced during the process. Who knows, that might not solve it either!

They don't replace the spider or voice coils during the recone.

One wild guess, forgive me if it seems simplistic, but are you certain all of the woofer's mounting screws are tight?

Since you shimmed the VC, have you checked the dustcap ? I had a woofer that I foamed with a rattle. Thought it was the dreaded VC rub. Turned out to be the dustcap was not glued down all the way around. Drove me crazy. Just a thought.

Thanks for the suggestions. I refoamed first with test tones, non-shimmed. Heard the rattle after reinstalling. Then I pulled the foam, cut the dust cap, and used shims to refoam. Still hearing the faint rattle in center. The dust cap looks secure, I used a good amount of glue around it. I can hear the rattle with the woofer removed from the cabinet also. I wondered if maybe the frame was flexing and causing the sound, but doesn't seem so. Rotating the woofer doesn't help.

I decided to take a look at the woofer again, and try taking the old foam off yet again. Lucky me, I ended up cracking the cone. Oh well! It may have already been cracked without me noticing. It was bugging me anyhow. Soooo I'm definitely going to need a recone now lol. I called parts Express, and the person I spoke with said they only have PG cones with rubber surrounds already attached. Of course rubber is fine, but my good cone has foam and I'd gravitate towards the same. Perhaps I needed to speak to someone else at PE?

Did you talk specifically to the people in their speaker repair center?

That said, if I could have had a rubber surround instead of foam, I would have done that for sure. I didn't know it was an option!

I'm pretty sure it was their repair center. I was redirected from sales and customer service. I don't think the girl I spoke with was real familiar with these models, however. She asked if they have a square frame, which isn't far off since HPM models do. I'm just not sure, since Simply Speakers has a 12" - DSS-7, DSS-9, DSS-E10 (special ribbed poly-mica cone, foam edge) as well for $90. Do you by chance have a receipt that lists your recone model number? I'm not sure about foam versus rubber; do you think it would make much difference? Thanks
