Pioneer DSSS-9D . . . help needed

Hello, Are there any Pioneer DSS-9D owners out there? . . . . .


- How do you like the Speakers ?? -- How do they compare to other Speakers that you have had, or heard?

- I am considering rebuilding some Pioneer DSS-9D Speakers...


- I need some help - and ideas on weather this is a worthwhile project..... and help with what to do.

- The First challenge - I would need to come up with a new crossover........

- I have working Tweeters and the working Midrange drivers..

- and I have the woofers , but the woofers graphite cones are toast , ..... woofers coils appear to be working though...

Sell the tweeters and midranges and save others.

I highly doubt you’ll ever find the woofers, and why would you have to remake the crossover?
There are fun projects, tough projects, and pointless projects. This is the latter.
 
Unfortunately, there are no replacement carbon graphite cones.

However- I have successfully reconed some of these HPM/DSS woofers, with paper cones, with great results. In fact, my pair of HPM900s was done this way, and I think they sounded every bit as good as original.

It just depends, on whether a proper size cone can be gotten now. It's been a while since I did one of these, and parts availability comes and goes sometimes...

They are wonderful speakers! Crossovers are fairly complex. Gordon could redo your woofers, I'm assuming using existing coils. You could always use an active crossover till you find originals. They're currently my reference speakers.
 
Hi absolve , No they don't have crossovers, or controls, or cabinets or labels , and the woofers are trashed - they want around $550 plus shipping for the top drivers..
 
DSS9/E10 are among the best sounding vintage speakers I have heard. The sound is more detailed than most box speakers of that era, and they are easy to listen to, not overly bright or hot like many complain of the HPM line. I think they're worth the trouble in your case.

The woofers show up for sale once or twice a year on eBay, not impossible to find. I think the largest hurdle for you is the crossovers. I can't recall ever seeing a pair for sale.
I don't know your skill level but if you are comfortable working with electronics you should be able to replicate the original crossovers based on this schematic diagram.

On the speaker cones that you used as replacements for the Graphite cones --

- Do you remember the information on the cones and maybe where you bought them??

Reviving this thread. I have a DSS-9 and I'm trying to upgrade the woofer caps and inductors. I noticed that on one website, L5 is valued at 26.1mh while above states 2x 8mh. Is this the difference between the DSS-9 from the 9D? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

26.1mh may be an error in that schematic. I would open the cabinet and see what is actually on your board.

Here is a picture showing the two stacked 8.0mh inductors inside of a DSS-E10.
