Pioneer Elite DV-09 DVD player.

I have a DV-09 that I purchased last year. I love the look and heft of these things. It's hooked up in the back room in a seldom used system just as a player for CD's . The problem with it is when playing a CD it skips on the first song or two like its having a hard time reading the disc. If I advance to the 3rd track it will play just fine. I tried using a cleaning disc which was of no help. I haven't even opened this thing up as of yet but thought someone might have a suggestion so I know what to look for once I do get a chance to peak inside.

Thought I'd revisit seems as there were no replies. Anyone with a suggestion of what might possibly be the issue?

This thread floated up a short time ago.

I WISH it was a sticky.

FWIW, I don't have a lot of success with repairing CDP, most I get are not worth trying.

The actual disk transport is buried in the bottom and it takes some digging to get down into them to try and poke around in there.
Lucky, the whole unit is mostly modular and does completely disassemble easily

Thanks so much for sharing blhagstrom. Its seems a shame to not have this unit repaired. It does play, but it does skip ( sputter ) over the first couple tracks and then plays fine on the rest of the disc. I will scour the link you supplied to see if I can find the info to attempt to fix it .I've never worked on a DVD player before. Should be interesting, but I hope it's something simple for my sake.

They are nice units.
The sound is excellent.
The picture is OK, probably great in the day. Maybe a re-cap on the video output board would help things. It's a little board in the back.
Over $2000 MSRP IIRC.

I originally picked it up about a year ago to use just to play CD's in the spare room set up so not too worried about the video part of it. You are correct about the retail price.

Look at the disc. Is the area toward the center (where the first tracks are) clean?

Results are the same on any disc played.
Yes, but have you looked at the discs, particularly the tracks that are skipping? I had this same issue on a Pioneer PD-M703 multidisc player. Every disc I put in there skipped. Turns out there is a stabilizer arm in there with felt pads that touches the disk when first inserted to stabilize the disk while the spindle moves into the center hole. The pads had deteriorated or gotten very dirty, and were leaving marks on every disc I inserted. Took me hours to figure this out. So, look at a disc you take out of the player and see if it is clean.

Thanks for the tip. I only glanced at the CD's when I removed them to ensure they weren't damaged and never paid attention that closely but will check it out.

It will be interesting if this is the issue. In my case, there were three pads, and so I did find three round spots that looked like grease on every disc I took out when I looked closely. I put them in clean, and they came out with those spots. As I mentioned, it took a long time to recognize this is what was going on. I'd suggest putting in a completely clean disc. Let it spin up and try to play the first track, then take it out and closely inspect the inner tracks of the disc.

Since it is playing the other tracks fine, I'd say its either mucking up the discs you put in, or it may be the spindle speed issue mentioned in the other thread zubulon posted. The lens/laser, etc. should be fine since it is reading other tracks.

Some times its the first 1-3 tracks and others it could be just the first track. It varies from disc to disc but on average its usually 1-3. Hopefully I will try to find time this weekend to take the lid off this thing as well. Just in the process of recapping another unit. Thanks Zeb for the link.

Well I took the whole thing apart to clean the lens and guide rails and apply a little oil on the rails.( a lot of screws to remove ). Bolted it all back up and unfortunately it did not help or fix the issue. I'm not sure where the spindle is but maybe I should have applied a little oil on it before bolting it up. Oh well now that I know how to take it apart the second time won't be so nerve racking.

took it apart again to put some oil on the spindle...didn't help, and now the remote doesn't work... I guess I mucked something up dang thing.

keith.... the disc have no marks upon removing .....so same as they went in.

OK, well you can eliminate that as the cause. Sounds like it may be spindle speed at the highest rmp. May be a defective control board issue?

Sorry, no. I can do mechanical stuff and follow circuit diagrams, but circuit board stuff is beyond my knowledge. Have you tried looking for/getting the service manual? It is available on hifiengine.

Yes I did download it from Hifiengine but honestly it may as well be another language. You have one up on me because I even find following circuited diagrams to be difficult. I'm more of a parts changer myself but can get by with some instruction and good teacher.
