Pioneer FB cones

While I liked my 99a's, they were no match when it came to detail like my ESS amt1a. I LIKE the fact that the non FB model doesn't command the money the FB stamped do. It means that I can purchase a set at a reasonable price and still sound the same as the FB stamped ones. Yes, the 99a's like to be pushed by a lot of watts. They make for a great party speaker! I had good results with mine when I got them up off the floor about 8 to 10 inches, tilted back a little, close to the wall, and used a 100 watt per channel Kyocera amp.

These things are so efficient, that my Scott can make the stacked pairs walk across the room. The Heils on top of are from the AMT1a. They are also very efficient, and the detail is extraordinary, for a non-electrostatic driver. As I had said a few years back, in this same thread, my Utah 12"/3-ways had tons more deep bass, but lacked the accuracy of these Pioneers.

Now that it's years later, 2020, maybe we see clearly enoughto get to the bottom of the FB marking.
The FB seemed to be 72 and 73 models only, as per the catalogs. I would think either the act of stamping and aligning the cone was too time consuming or that the 'free beaten' method of producing the paper had ceased because it does seem like it was favored in R&D, but nixed at the corporate level as too expensive. Anyone still care?
