Pioneer HPM-100 or Cerwin Vega 211R?

testwork

I have an opportunity to pick up a pair of decent shape Pioneer HPM-100's to replace my current Cerwin Vega 211R.

The Pioneer have the same size woofer. But can be placed closer to the front wall than the rear ported/rear midrange horn CV's.

I've never heard the HPM series before and it's a 45 minute drive to go check them out. Worth it?

I'm looking for more midbass. Better sound quality would be a bonus.

You live in Texas; I thought your front door was a 45 minute drive from your back door!

Well that's what it looked like when I used to watch "Dallas" and being a Brit I believed it :)

Can't say I've heard the Cerwin's but I have a pair or HPM 100's I personally like a lot. You can dump as much power as you want into them and as long as your amp isn't clipping they smile and keep things pretty linear in terms of output. I am the type of guy who loves detailed sound but occasionally need to feel the music more than clearly hear it, so I don the double hearing protection and strap in like the Memorex blown away guy and limit exposure to 20 minutes with the Yamaha M-85 kicking out 260 watts per channel. Amazingly enough, every time I get an audiological assessment, they tell me I have excellent hearing (5 db less sensitive on the left and the right being measured as 0db where 0 to +25 are considered normal hearing) year after year.

I have the original crossovers but run them with the mod. acording to my Tmobile G2 an external mic and both the spectral pro and RTA Pro apps both by RadonSoft, the supertweeters still work (amazing to me considering the number of hours at silly high levels). I bought a replacement set of drivers for when I calm down.

They are not the most accurate speakers but they are certainly good enough with the crossover mod to realize what you've been missing when compared to more esoteric gear.

Simply put they are the best LOUD speakers I have come across. The ultimate party speaker. I am willing to bet you'll be happy with them.

i drove hpm-100 with about 100W, they still sound nice.

for my understanding, the bass is not very impressive but it is clear as the casing is very solid.

While I don't have the exact same models for comparison my guess is the mid range and tweeter will be more in your face with the HPM's vs the CV's (you can always tone them down by turning down the lpads).

When you say mid-bass what freq range are you talking about? ie: 60 HZ to 100 HZ?
