Craigslist sale alert. He has a pair of "very good" Pioneer HPM 100's. He is asking $450.00. Worth the price if they are in good shape?:scratch2: I do not have much knowledge of these.
:thmbsp: or :thumbsdn:??

I'm waiting on the seller to send over some pictures.

Usually any post with a $ in it goes in Dollar and Sense. With that said, that price is steep IMO.

I have a pair I got for next to nothing. IMO they're worth about $100.

I just got two sets from another member for $250.00.

I think those you are looking at are way too high.

sit tight, a pair will pop up that are reasonable.

$300 seems to be the going price for a pair of the 200W drivers with no pushed in dust caps, perfect veneer, no holes in the grilles.

$450 is expensive for a pair in any condition except perhaps one that has had their crossovers restored with premium caps with original boxes, packing materials, and literature included.

Check the eBay closed auctions to get a good idea of going price for any vintage audio.

Thanks guys!! Sorry for the mis-post. Are these "good" sounding speakers? What is their rep?

It depends on who you ask as to whether they are a "good"sounding speaker.Do some research here on ak about the hpm100.There is plenty and then listen to them.At that price I am sure they will be around for a while. To me they are an ok speaker but the pair in question is way too high for a good cl pair.By the way I found two thrift pair for $20 each.

But just to not mislead the poor guy, finding a pair of HPM-100's for $20 is really an incredible stroke of luck. I agree $450 is too much to pay unless they were truly completely stone mint AND one values that sort of condition. I got mine on CL a year ago for $250/pair, and they were in very nice shape. $250-300 for a nice pair is a pretty typical price for these. $450 is the guy dreaming.

A few months back I sold a pair of the 100w version for $300. They were in near-perfect condition, one owner before me. I felt it was fair for both of us.

I think $250-300 is fair as well, $350-400 max and that's only if the crossovers have been redone. I paid $125 for my near mint pair, the deals are out there and will pop up.

$150 tops around here. Bought mine at a thrift for $50 in great condition. Sold them for $135.

I have to say, even I would have bought them for $135 and I try to not buy gear I don't have any need for! That being said, I had a pair of HPM-60s and I thought they sounded pretty decent although at the time I was comparing them to JBL 4311 and L36...:smoke:

Wow you guys sure do find some deals. If anyone near NE Ohio wants to sell a nice pair for under $200 let me know.

Be patient. I looked locally for 2 or 3 years then found 3 pairs within 6 months and all were less than $100 a pair but they weren't mint or 200w versions. They still rock the house though.

To the OP the 200w versions in nice condition sell for $400+ on eBay. Local sales are generally 25-50% less than what eBay sales are so the $350 price is a little high.

What someone here on AK is willing to pay or has paid doesn't really mean squat. Many of us find good deals because we are good at hunting them down. If you wanted a pair and those are in really nice condition I could see spending $350 for them.

If you've never heard HPM-100's I wouldn't suggest paying that much because you may not like them. Some people love them, some people hate them. Personally, I like them and I think they kick JBL L-100's asses, just as they were designed to do but others disagree.

Go listen to them so you'll at least know if you like them.

eBay is loaded with HPM-100s, many of which can sell for upwards of $500-$600 in cherry condition. Don't forget the buyer still has to pay for shipping on top of that.

I can tell you a pair of decent condition HPM100s listed on CL for $150 here in Denver would be gone in a day. In my research, the market is stronger for these speakers than some AKers suggest.

As for sound quality, new caps and proper placement with an EQ in the chain, and they sound pretty darn good for a 35 year old loudspeaker design.

Condition is everything.. the mintier they are, the more they will fetch.
Dont listen to thse lowballers who think they struck gold with thier sCratched and abused HPM100.

PRICE WISE, DONT PAY MORE THAN $450 FOR A MINT PRESTINE 200 WATT SET.
(mind you up here in Canada, these are very rare to find !) :)

I paid $325 for mine last month, found them locally.. and they are 9/10 cosmetic wise.
