My brother Ken and I have about 2,500 albums from the 60s and 70s which we hadn't listened to in decades. Two weeks ago he wanted to borrow thee mic stands for a high school music program, I loaned him the mic stands if he would bring some of the albums over and a turntable so I could do a little time travel. He brought four turntables, I chose the pioneer PL518 and traded out the cart and stylus off an old Marantz table, plugged it in to my cheap Sony system and off I went to 1976. Journey's Look into the Future album was playing I was loving it. My brother stopped in and complained about the right speaker had a blown woofer. I didn't care. I turned it over to mono and listened to the left side. Ken left in a huff saying we could do better. I fixed the blown woofer with a new foam ring, good as new I thought.
The next day Ken and I went to our nephew's pad and repossessed as pair of American Acoustic Lab speakers. They had the bass for sure, but within a day I didn't have a right channel at all. Bummer. So I put an ad in the paper. Looking for old stereo equipment.
This guy comes in my office on Friday and says I hear your looking for old stereo equipment. I said I was and he said he had some old pioneer equipment he hadn't even plugged in in years. He said he wanted $3000 for it. I couldn't afford $300, and told him I needed a new ride more, as my 92 Eldorado had blown a head gasket. He said wow I have a van I need to sell too. I agreed to go look at the van.
The van's not much, but one look at that system and I had to sit down. In a glass door cabinet, with terry cloth towels draped over them was a Pioneer SSX1280 receiver, a Pioneer PL560 Quartz Turntable, and a Pioneer CT F1000 cassette deck. Not only was there not a scratch on any of it. There wasn't even any dust on any of it. Perfect out of the box not even a fingerprint on the faceplate mint condition. Then he pulled back another towel and there underneath that was a pair of the most beautiful speakers I have ever laid eyes on. Pioneer CS99A speakers that still had the sales tag on them from when they guy bought the system in 1977. I began to get light headed and I could hear him talking about what fine funiture it had been as it was all made of some kind of walnut.
We went back outside and he tried to sell me the van. I half listend to the sales pitch. I tried to start the van. It wouldn't start, he said reverse was out of it. I thanked him and then went straight to the bank. I told them I had found the van of my dreams and then added $3000 to the price tag. I'm bringing that van home tomorrow loaded down with Pioneer Nirvana. He threw in an outdoor fm antenna because he liked me. I'm sending him a Christmas card.
