Pioneer PL-112D, a good choice?

It's a nice entry level turntable. However, the ad does not state anything about the servicing of the turntable. Such as, new belts, suspension adjustment, relubrication of the spindle bearing etc... However, it does say it's in great shape for its age.

Regarding price, it belongs to the D&S. However, it it were me I would be happier around $40-50 and spend the extra cash for a new stylus, belt and servicing of the turntable.

Thanks for your reply. I'll ask him if servicing has been done... I'll try to get it for 50$ nonetheless :)

I just picked a PL-112D up for $70. The guy I got it off of said he had just changed the belt and dropped a bit of lube in the motor (or bearing). It spins and sounded pretty good, and being a complete newb to TT's that was good enough for me.

Did you end up getting yours?

As "mythless" mentioned, nice entry level TT from Pioneer. Since he has, 'Prix négociable', try 50.00$ and expect to acquire a new belt and a new stylus which will bring your total, TT, belt, and stylus, around 95.00 to 100.00$
Bonne chance :thmbsp:

Not yet. I found a PL-516 for 60$. I'm wondering if it's not a better TT than the PL-112D, for about the same price. Actually, I've also found locally a PL-112D for 25$. So, for me 25$ or 60$ it's almost the same eh? So, PL-112D vs PL-516... :scratch2:

Merci! How about a PL-516 for 60$. Would that be a better TT than the PL-112D?

Belle citation dans votre signature :) I do love to look at the sea.

Personally, I would prefer the PL-516 because it's not suspended as well the most important aspect is that I think the tonearm is better. No harm in negotiating a fair price unless you yourself don't care with either or.

I say this is because though many would say ask for 50% off right off the bat, the seller may be offended and decide to ignore you. In that mind set, it may show the seller you yourself aren't interested in it all that much and may be looking for a cheap deal.

But, either or are fine turntables.

Merci,
J'ai passé une grande partie de ma vie en mer, et en plus, je demeure face à l'océan, très belle vue mais un peu froid et venteux en hiver.:D

The PL-516 is a step higher than a PL-112D.
60.00$ is not too bad of a price, if in good condition. One thing to think about, which has the better cartridge, if both came equipped with carts. Pick the one with the best cart.
One of my TT is a PL-115D, almost a twin of the 112D. I like it, but it's an entry level table. The PL-516 will be the better table.

Yes, the PL-516 seems slightly more interesting.

I don't mind negotiating, if the rebate is substantial. When the price is like 60$ and the item is supposed to last at least 10-12 years, I don't however. What's 20$ on a 10 yr scale? 2$/yr. Not worth it! Unless there is apparent damage of course. In which case, I'll will negotiate a fair price or cheap deal! :)

Where are you in Nova Scotia? I did visit the region in my youth. De beaux souvenirs!

Ok, then I'll try to take the PL-516. Both table are "original". The PL-516 doesn't look like to be used that much.

Thanks again!

I don't know if that is your first foray with turntables but, this PL-516 is a very good TT to begin with, and still a good table to have even if this is not your first time.
It will be a good match with your Sansui 9090, and Paradigm speakers.
When did you acquire this Sansui? Did you get it new, in the mid 70s. That would put you in the same age bracket as me.:D
Nevertheless, this is a very nice receiver.

Other TTs that will match very good with this receiver, Thorens, AR, Lenco, Sansui, Marantz, Technics, and many more.

hehehe I think we are not in the same age bracket. It was my dad's receiver. However, I grew with it, listening to the Sansui with Pioneer HPM-40 speakers. So many hours I spent on it. Great sound! I'm really happy that my dad gave it to me after all these years.

The TT I grew up with was a Marantz 6300. They are kinda expensive used (I saw some around 400-500$). They do look nice though!

I guess the only problem I see with the PL-516 is it's look. I'm not totally convinced by it and I'm just wondering with myself if I shouldn't wait another 6 months and spend slightly more. However, the PL516 looks like a solid unit that I could grew up with. Decisions, decisions... half of the fun! :)

No we are not in the same age bracket, I knew that. :D
It was nice though of your father giving you this excellent receiver. I've a few Sansui myself from the 70s, excellent product.

Go with the Pioneer for now, I's not a bad table. Pioneer from that era had excellent product.
For the future, keep your eyes open, and be patient. Paying 400-500$ for a TT, is way too much, even for the 6300 Marantz, however good it's.

A few tables to keep your eyes open for.
I think a fair budget when one is patient, around 200.00$, max.
Having the Pioneer will enable you to take your time in finding a good table at a more reasonable price.

Thorens models to look for:
145, 160, 146, 165, 166 the MKI and MKII versions.
If you are real lucky:
147, 125 and 126, the MKI and MKII versions.

Pioneer:
PL-550, 560, 570, 600, 610, and 630 to name a few

Marantz: Don't know much about Marantz, but heard good thing on this model, your old one, the 6300

Sansui: the ones I've heard of,
SR-636, and the Belt driven SR-4050

There is also Technics,
I'm presently looking for one. Lately I've asked a few questions on models to find at a more reasonable price than the 1200 series.
According to some members, the 1300 to 1800 series are the one to look for.

I don't know if you still have the HPM-40, but if you do, keep them. They are very good speakers.

Don't forget, you can always upgrade later down the road. You don't need to stick with the PL-516. If you like Marantz, take a look at Hitachi.

Indeed. I'm quite happy. Don't know how good it is compared to other receiver, that's the only good receiver I know! :) Can't complain. The HPM-40 are still at my father house, he uses them for his basement stereo. His mains speakers are HPM-100.

Thanks for heads-up recommendation. I'll keep an eye open for them :)

Don't forget, you can always upgrade later down the road. You don't need to stick with the PL-516. If you like Marantz, take a look at Hitachi.

Indeed! I'll grab the PL-516 and see how it goes. Can't go wrong for 60$.

Thanks again everyone!
