Just got a new (e-bay) Pioneer PL-112D. The guy didn't pack it well, and the tonearm was disengaged. It has lateral attachments and bearings at the pivot. I reattached it, but there seems to be a looseness or wobble in the arm pivot. Nothing appears broken. I looked "under the hood", and don't see any tightening mechanism. I looked at the Vinyl Engine instruction and service manual, and it wasn't very helpful. Anybody have any thoughts or need for further clarification?

When tonearms get whacked sufficiently to make them come loose, that's really bad news. Even if the arm can be reattached to its mount, there are often slight deformations. The shaft of the arm may have a slight bend. Damage may occur in the gimbal assembly: a bent c-frame, bent or broken needle bearings, damaged ball-bearing races.
If your arm seems loose and sloppy, that's pretty common. I would take a hard look at the needle bearings and related ball-bearing assemblies. If you don't have a set of jeweler's screwdrivers, you'll need to get your hands on one. On a majority of arms, the needle bearings are adjustable.

The PL-112D is one of my FAV of the Pioneer PL-D series decks. The plater and the tonearm are sprung independent from the motor and base. Nice deck!
Now, as it was not packed properly and the arm was damaged, the seller was neglagent. No, the carrier is not liable and there is no point in opening up a claim for a poorly packed turntable (lots of experience here). I stoped buying on e-bay because I got tired of people finding things in dumpters and not knowing anything about them.
Best bet if the arm literaly came LOSE from the mounting, see if the seller will refund you. If not, leave a NEG feedback against them as they have an obligation to pack the unit properly. If they do not know how to do that, they should not sell this kind of stuff. Once those berings are damaged, it's over. I have had and restored a few PL-112D's and trust me, they are delicate turntables.
