Yesterday I was able to grab a Marantz 2220 receiver and a Pioneer PL-15D II. I originally offered $120 for the Marantz and the Pioneer. They accepted. After they accepted my offer they discovered that the Pioneer turntable didn't work. The platter didn't spin when the arm was brought into position. I offered $70 total for the Marantz and non-working Pioneer and they accepted. Got them home and immediately searched on AudioKarma for any possible fixes for the problem with the turntable. The platter and motor pulley that turns the belt would spin by hand so nothing was locked up. It appeared that the turntable was not getting any power. Anyway, the AudioKarma search led me to the thread entitled "Pioneer pl-15D II will not power up. Suggestions?" started by SteveY. Turns out my table had the exact same problem that Steve's did. The nylon screws that held the red power switch in place had broken off and the switch was just hanging loose so it couldn't be engaged when the tonearm was brought into position to start the platter. Picked up 2 screws to lock the switch back down (had to drill out one of the nylon screw pieces that was stuck in the hole), put her back together and she fired up nicely. Pioneer PL-15D II turntable for $10.
Seller was the original owner and said he believed that the cartridge/stylus and the belt are original (yikes!), so they will have to be replaced. It is in great cosmetic condition. Very nice looking table. The Marantz is in very good condition too, with the usual few bulbs out. Contacted Dave Wojo for the fuse bulbs. A few days earlier I hit him up for lamps for the Yamaha CR-620 that I picked up last week. Dave is the Man!
So my first four pieces of vintage gear are in the house...Pioneer PL-115D (in fantastic condition), Pioneer PL-15D II, Yamaha CR-620, and Marantz 2220. This is going to be a fun (and expensive) hobby.
One question I had...wonder why Pioneer used nylon screws to hold down the switch on the 15D II? Did they use nylon instead of metal screws for a reason?
These same folks had some other items that they were selling that they had yet to post to craigs. Pioneer SA-8100 amp and TX-8100 tuner and some beautiful looking Pioneer CS-99A speakers. They are the original owners of all of this stuff. The Pioneer amp & tuner are in fantastic cosmetic condition and all the bulbs in the tuner appear to function. The speakers were in great shape too, with just a stain on the top of one that wasn't very noticeable. Let me tell ya, those suckers were gorgeous. I wanted to walk out with them so bad. But they are trying to get ebay prices for these items off craigs. They wanted $300 for the amp and tuner and at least $500 for the speakers. And I was going to offer them $200 for everything (Marantz, TT, amp & tuner, and speakers)! But they had looked up what the items where listed for on ebay, so that ruined any chance I had of scoring a very nice deal. Maybe they will come down on the prices if they don't get any bites on the high prices. I told them to keep my number and give me a call if they did.
