Pioneer PL-4 Repair

Hi all, this is my first thread on AK. I look forward to becoming a part of this community. Let's get down to business. I just purchased a non-functioning PL-4 on eBay for about $50. This is the first TT I'll be attempting to repair...in fact this is my first TT ever. Something about repairing a vintage TT really peaked my interest and who knows, if I don't royally screw it up, I'd love to turn this into a hobby. This PL-4 has the following issues:

  1. The platter sometimes spins counterclockwise when the tonearm is engaged, but not always - I read this might be due to faulty capacitors, but I'm not sure
  2. Infamous speed issue - I've downloaded the disassembly/repair guide created by @beej as well as found the youtube guide posted by Jim Litz. Huge thanks to them both! I feel like I'm in good hands in terms of fixing this problem
  3. Missing a cartridge & stylus - This is where I'm most in the dark. Not sure where to begin and what to look for. Would appreciate any recommendations
Please let me know if you have any questions.

I didn't get mine to work until replaced the potentiometer. But what causes it to restart if the platter is not manually stopped?
