All,

I was hope someone could point me in the direction of a some stylus/cartridge replacement options for the pioneer pl-505 straight arm direct drive table. Google AI says stock is a Pioneer PN-5MC. Im out of my element on how to determine what a good replacement should be. Thoughts appreciated.

Thank you

By all rights a decent table that reportedly came with a MC cartridge. Using Ortofon's "find the right cartridge", they recommend either the OM5 series or the Quintet models. From what I read on the webz people like the OM series with this table. Make sure your preamp can handle the MC cartridge.

Maybe an analogy that fits is having a tube amplifier and deciding on which tubes to "roll" (try out in the circuit to see if a different spec'd tube sounds better than the original one. I would recommend staying with MM or MI cartridges initially to see what you prefer. The moving coil cartridges are typically much more expensive than the average MM or MI ones. I would recommend starting out with a few used inexpensive ones, like AT or Shure. Is is hard to know what might sound good without trying it in your system. Each cartridge needs to be aligned differently, depending on its physical size and weight.
