Pioneer PL-514 autoreturn: skating halfway back?

savv

Super Member
I have a Pioneer PL-514 Auto-return where the needle would contact the record at the half-way point of its return back to its holder (making that annoying screeching sound). Other than this issue all other functions work fine.
Where do I start troubleshooting? Is my tonearm unbalanced?
Any help is appreciated.

If it touches down half way it is probably barely lifting enough at the highest point. There should be a screw near the cue platform that will allow the arm to lift higher. Screw it counterclockwise a bit and see if helps.

I had a PL-514x

The plastic cue arm cracks! It falls out of adjustment so it doesn't lift high enough. You probably have your stiles very close to the record on start up cueing also.

Look at the back side of the plastic cue you will see a little hole. See if it has a hair line crack. Anyway I forgot weather the screw is allen I think it is. loosen and pull up on the cue to adjust higher. You might be able to just pull it up a bit with out messing with the screw if it's cracked.

That said be careful not to lift the cue while the arm is locked on the rest. You will push the cue back down out of adjustment
