Pioneer PL - 55X Problem

I have a question hopefully somebody can help me out, When I go to play a record the record will spin up I can move the arm over and put it down on the record but as soon as the needle touches the record it automatically lifts backup and goes back to its cradle automatically even if you hold down the lever to keep the arm down it just clicks and clicks and clicks and clicks and when you let go of the lever it picks itself backup goes to it cradle and shuts itself off. Can anybody help me out? This turntable was given to me for free, I don't know if it worked for the previous owner but I have some vinyl that would really like to listen to
