Hi, new poster here, but very frequent lurker while narrowing my choice of vintage purchase.
I am now owner of a Pioneer PL-560 in almost mint cosmetic condition. Coming from a totally nonadjustable entry level P-Mount JVC AL-A1 so I am clueless so forgive these questions.
Turntable came with balance weight installed backwards, that didn't seem correct so I switched it so the numbers face me. Cartridge is a AT 90 which i am almost certain is a P-Mount.. with an adapter? to mate it with the 1/2 inch tone arm. Seems less then ideal. Success to date is resolving issue of Tonearm stopping just short of the arm rest by replacing the almost nonexistent pad on the return arm with new foam pad. Success thanks to audiokarma since tonearm now returns completely and turns off turntable. Sorry for long background story, but here are two questions:
1. Tonearm balance seems impossible since the tone arm rests on the Arm Elevator during balancing process (plug in, manual, press start, unplug from power) It seems like the Arm Elevator is not descending far enough to allow free movement of the tone arm downward to allow unbiased balancing. Am I overthinking this?
2. Tonearm seems very loose in all directions almost like it is just resting on a pedestal. I have checked the manuals for the 518, 530 and 540..all have different tonearms ... mine according the manual is PPD-577 so not sure if guidance i see on the other family members is applicable. Also, there are two screws on each side of the tonearm "ring" where the back of the tone arm rests inside on a pivot...do these need to be tightened? No guidence that I can find in the 560 owners or service manual.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!
