It might be easier if I start a new thread rather than add onto the 12+ pages in Rich's.

I purchased the turntable several months ago and it was doing well except for the tonearm belt. I successfully replaced the belt and enjoyed using the turntable until the back-and-forth speed problems started.

CRC Contact Cleaner is what I use because Deoxit is nearly unobtainable in Hawaii. I have to order it from the US mainland and aerosol cans aren't allowed with the post office.

I have been focusing on the 33/45 speed, Quartz Lock and speed control pot for cleaning. The turntable was working after cleaning then a day or a few days later started going back-and-forth again. I also disassembled the power switch, carefully cleaned it and reassembled it. I used 1500 grit sandpaper and no contact cleaner.

Now it's been several days since the turntable has operated properly. Today I opened it up again (probably the 7th or 8th time since I started "fixing" the turntable), sprayed contact cleaner in the pot a few times, rotated it and sprayed the Quartz lock and 33/45 switches multiple times, pushing them down and releasing.

The reassembled turntable still doesn't spin properly and now there's a NEW problem! When plugged in, the power is on, regardless of the power switch position. I took the turntable apart again and checked the power switch and wires. Everything looks intact. I did not disassemble the power switch again.

I've been thinking it would be easier to simply replace switches rather than fiddle with them. Another poster had provided information about switches on Digikey, specifically these switches: 401-1194-ND 6PDT and 401-1193-ND 4PDT. The website says they are not available.

Looking at Mouser, I am just taking a shot and looking at parts that appear similar.

Aside:
Did you clean the platter belt track and motor spindle? I found oft. found these tracks need a touch of fine sand paper and alcohol clean when noticing wandering variable speed issues.
Contact Caig and ask where you can get deoxit.

It is a direct drive table.
 
Just as a heads up, there are at least several threads regarding speed issues on AK. Most refer to Rich's thread, but most aren't going so far as a complete restoration. I recall reading at least several success stories about correcting speed issues. It might be worth searching "PL-630 speed issue" or some such, if you haven't already, and dig a little into the content of the resulting threads.

As I have a PL-630 with occasional speed issues (shelved for now), I have researched the issue multiple times when my thoughts wander in that direction.
 
Thank you, I have also read other threads. I'll look again. I'd really like to know if anybody has recommendations for new switches. I don't know much about electronics and would like to replace switches with similar-looking switches, I can handle soldering.
 
You may have one bad switch in the bank of switches on the pcb but easier to search for the pcb on the bay. however it may not be a switch issue and main board needs recapping. :dunno:
 
I bought the switches and pots on Mouser. Will first try changing the pot and see what happens. Thank you.
 
I had an electronics repair guy look at the PL-630, he said the PA2005 chip had to be replaced. I found one on the Veswin website, ordered, received it and he picked it up. Nine months later, he brought the turntable back and it was working. There was another chip he replaced, the PD1003 which he said was readily available. The turntable worked fine for awhile then it began doing the back and forth again.

I'm not interested in having him take another look at the turntable for months on end. He's a good guy but he does this on the side from his regular job. There's only one other guy I know of on Oahu who might be able to fix it and he's booked for months.

A workaround I figured out is to leave the turntable power on for about 15 minutes before playing a record. That makes it possible to use it and play records properly. I'm wondering if it's an issue with certain capacitors. Looking at Rich's post, he refers to changing the caps on the "speed control board" - I thought I might start there. However looking at the schematic, I don't see a part with that same name. I think it's the Control B Assembly - XWX-007. I want to identify it so that I can buy the caps for that board because I think it might be the most likely suspect with the speed issues.

Can anyone confirm that's the proper board and maybe even provide a list of the caps I can order from Mouser? I found a list on another PL-630 repair thread however it doesn't include the C4 cross reference.

Got a link to 'Rich's' post? perhaps offers a hint to this cap charging, perhaps it's the source to provide the charging of the speed control board? (perhaps post to that link and ask?)
Of course you can just identify and replace what's on that board. If any electrolytics, I doubt it requires any 'glamour' caps just the
Voltage, uf ratings and size.
 
Yes that's the post I was looking at - thanks for showing me that each post is numbered. He refers to it as the "Speed Control Board" and I'm wondering if it's Control B Assembly - XWX-007 in the schematic.
 
You can identify the board as the meter is wired to it simply trace those wires. (read the post as he says put the meter aside among other instructions... he also says take your time. :D)
